Would You Wear A Dress Over Jeans?

Feb 08, 2008 @ 3:49pm

girl-dress-over-jeans.jpg It's that time of year again when you want to wear the Spring '08 stuff... but you can't, unless you have a town car, or a permanent residence near the equator.

It's times like these when girls resort to layering, a phenomenon that can either be chic or disastrous. It's cool when someone slips a strapless dress or corset over a thin cashmere sweater, and a long-sleeve thermal can look great underneath a cropped jacket. Even deeply colored tights under shorts can be cute, as long as the shape of your outfit goes more equestrian and less surfer.

But what about that classic high-school combo, dresses over jeans?

One side of our wardrobe shrieks "No! Hippie art teacher! Go back!"

But the other coos, "Ooh, Venetia Scott and Marc Jacobs, right?"

It's a tough battle, one that pits comfort and craving up against the fact that you might look a little stupid.

Can it be done?

no way. don't don't don't. i have to admit i saw a certain fashionista blogger trying this look at catherine holstein last week, and i wasn't a fan.

if you have to, make it a short dress. with tight jeans.

this seasons project runway has also tried to force feed us this idea... i've still never seen it work on anyone.

I want to say 'no,' but I do think it can look cute of the dress is on the short side, more like a tunic.

NO. NO NO NO NO NO. this was only cool in middle school. I cringed when Juno wore a skirt over her jeans: why perpetuate the fug?

Just wear them over tights and flat boots, layered with a sweater, jacket, and scarf. That's what I do.

Hell no! If you really want to wear a dress, wear tights and a wool coat, scarf, and gloves.

YES! and the only people that pull it off are the ones who dont care, which is that "effortless" style everyone always seems to want. my sister wore a short black shift dress over dark blue skinny jeans to fashion week today!

No. I've never seen it work and personally hate the idea...it's so silly.

I just did today. I was definitely wary of it but I haven't done laundry in a while so my choices were limited. While I'm not completely happy with it (I think it needs some perfecting), it's honestly not as bad as I thought it would be. I think it just depends on the cut of the jeans and of the dress. And the shoes. The shoes are always important.

yes. as long as it's above the knee and not busy. seriously, how is wearing a tunic over jeans that much different than a shorter dress over jeans? in this picture, the proportions are just way off. i think if you are going to do a coat on top of your dress + jeans, it should be the same length as your dress or a little longer or even a teensy bit shorter so the dress peeks out under it.

only if the jeans are super skinny, like denim leggings and the dress is short and not too tight. In general though, definitely wait for the weather and do one or the other.

the fug girls are trash. if it was up to them, everyone would be wearing snoresville satin gowns all the time. try having some vision.

but i agree. i hate dresses over pants/trousers.

NO NO NO NO.

This is a great way to make your butt look big, your hips look thunderous and in most cases, the button of the jeans or the buckle keeping the jeans on will poke through the skirt making it look kinda just awkward.

Layering pants with skirts is not okay. Layers shirts in any way can be just plain cute. The concepts are not equal.

If you want to keep warm, stick with wool stockings or something opaque. If you want to look trendy, hip, unique - DO SOMETHING ELSE (that's the point).

Please.

Thank you.

first, the fug girls hate satin. :)
second, it can be done just like anything else as long as the person wearing it understands their body, proportion, and color. sadly, many women don't, and we end up with the scary hippy art teachers. yikes.

Never, ever, skirt or dress with trousers.
I don't know the word for the piece which has very flared leg, both legs combining to create a full skirt.
Long shirts, and tunics, can look so great with fitted jeans.
But dress over trousers? Pas du tout, uh uh.

most of the time its F-U-G-L-Y but sometimes (either with a basic dress that goes to about midthigh or higher and skin tight skinny jeans, or obviously leggings) on the right person it can be pulled off ... it's usually a person who thinks they're being fashionable but really aren't, that tries to pull it off the wrong way (a dress that is obviously meant to be worn alone with flare jeans)

YES! Definitely. Just make sure the dress is long enough to seem like a long top, anything below the knee is a no.

No. This cannot look good, especially with flared pants. If you must, go skinny. This is just an awkward look. Stick with tights or leggings.

Yes I know this is Fashionista, but here's a different point. Would I wear it. Depends what the day is like. What about our model friend here who chose to. I say she rocks it well and as for the consensus I'm disappointed. The majority here seems to have a cookie cutter vision of what she should be wearing. They might as well say it would have been better with shoulder pads and we all know the inner turmoil that brings up. So let our happy friend wear skirts over her pants with delight. Her trend seems something more than clothes themselves anyways. We all can't be models and then again why should we. Their essential purpose it to be a walking hanger for our consumption. If we say that skirts over pants are wrong the maybe our reflection doesn't have the confidence to make right. That's my rant. Thanks

Yes! But only because everyone does it in montreal. Is it hippie? I always see it on the french girls who are at Tamtams and spend semesters in Montmartre.

I'm from Montreal, never copy Montreal french girl style! It is NOT the same as chic french from France style. It is tacky and bad and totally hippie is the worst possible way. Just eat poutine and ignore what people where there.

I think it can be done. I have silk tunic dress (in the cooler months I wear a long sleeve under it). I wear a pair of dark blue jeans with it. And, a belt! A belt is key. It looks naff otherwise. The belt gives you that extra shape. I always receive heaps of compliments on it. Oh, and yes. I agree, the shoes have to be right! I think heels are easier to place with the outfit than flats.

It is very London street circa '03 or '04. When it was done the right way, with very skinny jeans and the right proportions, it looked pretty cool. Doing it the wrong way is truly hideous and blots out any memory of the girls who looked cute. I think there was a moment when it was a modern silouhette but at this point you better be really really really damn sure you know what you are doing.

Fashion has no rules - if you can make it work, do it!
And the fug girls taste is so conservative it puts me to sleep.

You can only do it when you have tight jeans on and a short dress, maybe cinched in with a belt.
NEVER flare jeans with a long skirt!
