Would You Wear Printed Rain Boots?

bloomingdales rain boots.jpgIt’s weird how the smallest things can split people.

We’ve had the Obama vs. Hilary debate a hundred times with our friends, disagreed with tons of them, and managed to move onto another discussion in seconds. The same thing happens with talk about war, about religion, about whether the Sex and the City movie will be any good.

But somehow, one recent argument always stops a friendship cold:

Whether or not to wear printed rain boots.

Some girls can’t get enough of the little ducks, whales, and hearts that splay across the rubber wellies in Ricky’s and Bloomingdale’s. Some even head to Barneys in search of Burberry prints or Pucci swirls, and Coach has a well-branded pair as well; shockingly Juicy Couture doesn’t (yet).

But then there’s that other camp of girls that cannot, will not, and shall not sport prints on their rain boots, regardless of their designer status. These girls believe the only stuff on rain boots should be mud, the kind that Kate Moss kicked up at Glastonbury.

The beliefs are deep and dividing, and have even caused (on more than one occasion) some rather fizzing fights in the Fashionista office.

Where do you stand?

And put me far away from the whole mess.

As cute as they are, they are just an excuse to brighten up the gloom. My personal reaction is that of confusion, when spotting plaid rain boots, for instance. I mean if you really want to sport a pattern, wear a scarf. There is no justification though, for wearing duckies etc., it just looks silly. But it's sort of like going out with a much younger man: if you can pull it off, then go ahead.

HELL NO. I despise these boots. They are cheap-looking, usually garish, and just straight corny.

Rubber rain boots are a must though, in this city. (Especially in today's conditions!) I opted for a pair of matte black rubber riding-boot style boots from J.Crew, last season. They are classic (almost like something you would wear out on the paddock, tee hee) and I won't cringe and think "What the HELL was I thinking??" in a couple years.

I've gotten more compliments on the rose-print rain boots I bought for 15 euros in Venice than almost anything else I own. But for me, it's about needing to cheer myself up on rainy days.

For us snowbound girls in the Midwest, however, there's another issue altogether, and that's snow boots. Try finding something that's warm and waterproof and not clunky... harder than you think! Any suggestions, anyone?

And P.S., yes, Midwestern university girls still wear Uggs ... with their sweats or jeans tucked in ... that trend, it seems, shall never die.

Rainboots are unfortunately necessary in some cities. I think some print is OK (plaid or some very simple and toned-down striped) but duckies and other child-like pattern is a bit much.

I've got a pair of dark blue plaid ones and I get compliments on them all the time. The dark blue blends well with dark jeans so the boots themselves don't clash with the outfit.

Posts like this make me really question you girls. Maybe it's different in the rest of the US, but I KNOW you all live in NYC. And when the streets and half the subway are flooded, what else are we supposed to wear? The Louboutin heels just aren't gonna cut it when it's been raining for 2 days straight.

The way this is going, I'm waiting for the day when you guys say things like bras, or socks, or gloves in winter are passe.

Child-like prints on anyone over the age of twenty-five doesn't really work (just saying).

I have a pair of purple ones that have a small heart with a set of keys on them on the side, the design is very subtle.
I get compliments on them as well, and they're nice to wear on a grey day.

Chasing pavements, I KNOW what you mean about Midwestern college girls. Sorority stars are by far the worst offenders in the Big 10.

I'm a fan of printed wellies in one case only: if the personality of the girl wearing them matches the boots. Otherwise, just get a solid bright color and call it a day!

Mine are hunter green and I'll never grow bored

In the midwestern city I live in, these awful things are just as ubiqitous as uggs and crocs. The college girls wear them with their north face fleece jackets and louis vuittons. Normal rain boots are fine if it's raining and muddy, but there is no excuse for those tacky printed ones.

Since rain boots are needed during the spring thaw where I live, I think it's fun to brighten up the gloom by having a subtle print like colorful strips, a simple swirl, or cute polka dots. Otherwise, a simple solid color works.

I've not really into the random ducks or designer prints or anything over the top like cow prints. Those are a bit childish and/or limiting. (Or for the designer prints, too expensive for a pair of rubber boots).

I realize this post was about *printed* boots. But considering the printed boots are sold everywhere, and average about $20-30 they are a lot easier to find and afford compared to $99 hunters. Some of us have better things to blow $100 on. I'd rather have a new dress and shitty b&w polka dot boots than $100 rainboots.

Most prints are cheap looking and therefore rather ugly. Some prints are much better looking, for example I have a pair of Pucci rainboots, not just for the cute design but also because they are high quality boots. If I didn't have the boots I have now, I would only buy printed if it was a nice design that would go well with most of my clothes.

It is a bit of a dilemma - you want something chic, but there's that feeling that they might as well be fun. (I don't know how much it has to do with the fact that wellies allow you to jump around in puddles like a five-year-old.)

I had this debate with myself when picking out a pair. Well, first of all, I got really attached to a basically Tiffany blue colored pair on Target's website... but I was holding out for some J Crews because I had a gift card. They came out with a cute navy pair with SMALL hot pink dots (large dots would be out of the question for me). I thought they were perfect, but wanted them to go on sale...of course, I waited too long. (Extra kick in the pants: my friend got them for about ten bucks in store. AND she's my size. I almost offered to buy them from her.)
Anyway, I ended up with a plain pair of navy ones that I'm very happy with.

My sister recently got a pair from Target - she was torn between the cupcake print ones (aaannd she's in college) and some black ones with white fleurs de lis. She picked the fleurs de lis and they're great - not tacky, but not boring either. And what doesn't go with black and white?

Instead of post after post: Would you DARE to leave the house without makeup? Would you wear...gasp...a HEADBAND!? Or barrettes, even? And then comment after comment about how "I'm so much cooler and more fashionable than all those loser girls I see walking around, in their dorky rainboots/Uggs/Converse/flip-flops and their evil sweatpants!" Fashion is supposed to be fun, but this crowd is so unforgiving, I'm about ready to quit reading Fashionista.

I'd rather not have a print on mine. That said, there is some merit to what some posters have said about taking things a little too seriously. I hate Uggs but I'm sorry, when there is 3 inches of salt on the ground and snow and mud and ice everywhere, you damn well bet I'm not walking around letting the bottoms of my expensive jeans get ruined or destroying some pretentious I-don't-wear-Uggs pair of designer boots. I dropped $400 on a pair of boots two winters ago to avoid the Ugg thing and... surpise surprise... they fell apart before Springtime. So honestly some people need to lighten up. If you live in California then you can afford to be picky, but when the weather sucks people need to get over themselves. And stop ripping on other girls for it too.

NB. Crocs are always ugly.

I think we must draw the line with prints - no kittens or bunny rabbits, but cool original prints, like stripes or maybe even some spots I'm sure wouldn't go astray!

They are definitely one of the more practical purchases, helping us women justify spending the money on them :) unlike that Twenty8Twelve dress I just purchased...for the summer. Oops!

I think that prints can be ok if they are really well matched to the outfit (which should be all solid colors).

Personally, I love sleeker looking rain boots (I have black Chooka riding rain boots) in solid colors. They can be much more easily matched to the outfit you are wearing so that you look well put together.

So unless you are going to buy several different pairs of rain boots to perfectly match every outfit you wear, solid ones are just more practical and classier.

That said, if I was going to buy rain boots specifically for gardening, I would go wild and buy the craziest print I could find. It is fun to channel your inner child sometimes, but not when you are trying to look fashionable.
