Hipsters Love Jersey; Urban Catches On

Mar 19, 2008 @ 1:32pm

americanapparelurbanoutfitters.jpgLet us begin by saying, we're very aware that V-neck shirts have been around for a while.

That said, anyone who's lived in a metropolitan city within the last five years will identify that specific deep V with ribbed trim and too-long sleeves with American Apparel.

So when we saw Urban Outfitter's new t-shirt called, "The Truly, Madly, Deeply Deep V Tee," (on the right), we thought first of dancing with our 8th grade crush to the Savage Garden song from whence the t-shirt name came, and then, of how much American Apparel's success must be hurting Urban's monopoly over hipster closets from Brooklyn to Berkeley.

The t-shirt coup comes hot on the heels of recent display changes we've noted at Urban stores, (at least in the New York area, because, you know, that's where we live), that include loads of layered jersey fabric and heathered grey styled a la American Apparel.

And the question of which store is more insanely overpriced is finally answered: AA's sells for $18.00 while Urban's wannabe goes for a whopping $24.00.

It actually makes us feel a little better about the AA stack sitting in our drawer.

Now I feel so stupid for buying the Urban version...I don't know why I did it!!!

AA has incredibly more comfortable fabrics, and a larger color selection. Definitely a cheap way to add color to an outfit!

I've that exact shirt! Never bought into Urban but as I sit at my desk I am head to toe in AA: Cotton Spandex Turtleneck dress and their delicious n durable leggings of the same blend. I'm a bit of a slave for their colors n laid back cuts. Nothing says cool comfort quite like em!

I have big boobs, a [comparatively] very small waist, and wide hips. I have one of the Truly Madly Deeply printed tees in the same shape as the solid ones above. It is way more flattering to my figure than the AA tees.

Even the women's line of AA tees doesn't seem to want to particularly accommodate a waistline. They make me look square. Blech.

As a dude, urban def has the better deal and better quality. 2 for 24 bucks at urban..

The AA tees are fabulous...casual and colorful and comfy! But it's true, they have a very straight fit and don't exactly hug curves.

while all the debate over fit is well and good, i think what is just as important is that AA is a company that makes their shirts in the US and provides decent wages while UO (like everyone else) produced their clothes in overseas sweatshops. furthermore, i heard several accounts from grassroots designers about UO stealing their idea after turning them down in a meeting.

Let's not forget the beautiful Anthony Minghella (RIP) film, Truly, Madly, Deeply, which came out well before Savage Garden's song--in 1990. Although I would imagine UO took its inspiration from the Savage Garden song, as both are vapid, lame, and not hip.

I disagree about the AA shirts not being flattering, i have a small frame but bigger boobs and hips and all my 50/50 deep v's, men's super v, cotton ribs hug me fantastically. they definately make my arms look skinnier than they are (yay)...

all the urban shirts i collected in college shrunk and are not flattering at all anymore. helloo overpriced.

my uo t-shirts are way softer than my aa t-shirts. worth the extra money, in my opinion.

you can also feel good because AA's clothes are all made and manufactured in the US unlike Urban's which are imported from overseas.

my vote is with the american apparel version. in fact, i am wearing one right now. but it's so super soft and feels like a great worn in tshirt, but this one is only a few weeks old! i adore soft tshirts.

If you read the copy on UO's site for most of their tees-including the truly, madly, deeply one above they are all made in the USA as well-so AA doesn't really have that on Urban

I think I have about 4 v-necks which is soon to be 5, with all those new colors that came out. All from american apparel, who's v-necks I find are way superior to the urban ones I have.
