We’ve had grand plans of finding the perfect white dress at H&M and splattering it a la YSL. Or discovering the poufiest prom dress on which to duplicate Dolce’s wildy textured strokes.
But we might have been thinking a little too big.
The Sergio Rossi shoes on Elle‘s March trend page, however, were the perfect answer to our painting DIY quest.
Since it’s pretty much impossible to find plain white stilettos under $30, we painted a pair of H&M heels white. After they dried, we penciled on a crude outline of dripping paint – as much as we would’ve loved to just pour the paint over the heel and go with it – we knew it’d be a disaster.
So we filled in the lines with blue paint, and voila! They might not look just like Sergio’s, but we actually like the visible brush strokes.
And from the looks we got last night, well, we’re either crazy, or we just made some really cute shoes.

I like the idea behind this, but it looks like a rush job. You could have taken more time and been more careful about painting. Especially around the soles and heels.

i’m not gonna hate, its a cute idea. just i’m thinking you used the wrong paint. gouache would have been a lot more matte than acrylic. if you try it again, maybe also use white gesso instead of white paint.
The white paint job is where this went horribly wrong. I don’t really consider that a stiletto, either (although maybe you’re saying you couldn’t find a stiletto and therefore went for a pump?). Anywho you could probably find a plain, white, reasonably cheap 3″ pump on a “dyeable” shoe website somewhere if you are truly committed to this kind-of-awful fad.
I’ve never had luck with painting shoes. The paint always, always rubs off on everything, and if you try to seal/shellac the shoes, they will be too stiff to wear.

They make paints specifically for painting on shoes. I think you might have better luck with those.

props for trying, but i think if you put a tad bit more effort into this, the end result would be better.
I think the idea was a good one but the execution, I’m sorry to say, fell short. Maybe better paint?

i’m a total sucker for the DIY, but these look very loving hands at home.
No good, my dears, the white paint job is just wrong, I also thing the stiff lines of the ” drips ” pattern mirrors and unhappily emphasizes the stiff uncomfortable look of the white paint on the stiff white shoes. It’s also that the shape of the shoes themselves, even unpainted, is simply too dowdy…So if you got a better cut of white leather shoes ( they are all over thrift shops), got some nice shoe dye, and went for a softer ombre/ tie dye/ splatter effect – maybe this could work?
These would look so much better if they had started with white shoes. There are lots of cheap white shoes out there. Did you try Payless, or JC Penny or Sears? Also, paint on leather shoes will probably crack over time. You can buy white satin “dyable” shoes that are so popular for weddings and proms, and the paint or dye will not crack.
It was a good try though. Im sure you had fun while painting them :)
Looks Like its Acrylic paint. try using a rulers next time and some stencils with a more expensive soft haired brush.
