Goodbye Gallagher’s

Monday, Mar 31, 2008 / 1:14 PM

old vogue cover.jpgAttention designers, fashion students, interns and magazine addicts: Gallagher’s on 12th Street is (almost) officially no more.
WWD reports that the 17-year old basement store, piled high with what seems like every copy of every magazine ever (they have over a million editions), will close up at the end of this week, due to a steep rise in rent.
The Gallaghers are moving their archive to their barn in the Catskills, and you can still buy certain editions from Vintage Magazines.
We have no idea where design assistants will go to flip through old issues of Charm, but we guess Gimbel Library (Parsons) and Gladys Marcus Library (FIT) might get a lot more interesting people hanging out in the study cubicles now.

noooooo…they already had to shut down the gallery (which had tons of amazing photography books), and now they’re moving the archive? such a shame. i wish they’d move it Brooklyn or something and not the Catskills. this makes me so sad. i happened upon this place when i first came to the city and it was one of those uniquely New York places that i really really loved.

Sad to hear they are moving but they are not closing so whats the story here?

moving their archive to the barn huh? um, it’s not going to be much of an archive for long then

Yipes. A paper archive will not last in a barn. Their stuff will be mildewy and molded very quickly. Such a shame — they are a wonderful resource.

Noooo! How will I live?
It was my fashion fix. (*sobs*)
Could they take the store online?

How sad! I loved that place.
