Is Your Makeup Vegan?

thais.jpgWe’re always horrified by the statistics that women eat a pound of lipstick a year, or whatever, and it’s certainly impacted our vanity table:

Staring at us from our makeup case are a variety of organic lip balms from Clark’s Botanicals, Boots, Kiehl’s, and Korres, and we’ve almost given up lipstick altogether.

But Urban Decay is taking that concept one step further- while shopping for eye glitter a la Marion Cotillard last week, we noticed they had an entire section called “Vegan Beauty.”

Apparently, many makeups are still made with animal products - anything from lard to cream proteins or honey - that vegans can’t touch.

To resolve that issue, the company has Vegan Friendly labels on all of their appropriate products - which are actually most of them.

We think it’s a great idea and hope other companies follow suit - though perhaps the most “organic” of them all, Burt’s Bees, can never participate, since their wax and honey is indeed made by little animals (and it’s so good!)

PS: The model at right is Thais from Next!

!!!!! wow! My Mom is an esthetician, she used and sold exclusively Arbonne when I was growing up. It's a great line. I also recommend Annemarie Borlind, which is sold at whole foods. I almost don't want to let the word get out, but their tinted moisturizer is the BEST EVER.

I LOVE the everyday minerals brand, I think they are vegan... if not then they are very close to it. Only 3 ingredients... and its owned by a small, US company. Made in the US too.
Much better than bare escentuals. I will have to try the new Urban Decay stuff and try arbonne... where is it made, anyone know?

Annemarie Borlind makes the best lipstick ever. You can buy directly from the company's website, but it's too expensive outside of Germany. I just stock up when I'm abroad.

People here in Berkeley are really into the vegan beauty products.

Sephora has an organic section on their site... giving it top real estate even in the main navigation bar.

i'm pretty sure that urban decay has always been doing this -- or at least, that it has for years. their whole thing is anti-animal cruelty (hence the synthetic brushes.)

Urban Decay has had the "Marley approved" purple paw symbol for a while now, to designate vegan products. Kudos to Urban Decay, and kudos to Fahionista for highlighting this issue! Yes, vegans want to look good, too!

I agree, Urban Decay is awesome. For more vegan goodies check gourmetbodytreats.com. Their products are organic, vegan and fair trade. Can it get any better than that? :) Their mineral eyeshadows are the best I ever tried. I also fyrinnae.com, they sell mostly eyeshadows, in so many wonderful and unique colours. All vegan! Then there's sevicosmetics.com, very beautiful vegan makeup and brushes.

Being vegan just got easier and more colourful! :)
