Quote of the Day

“It was Mary-Kate who first emerged as a style icon. Three years ago, when the twins started at New York University, she took to slinking around in enormous shaggy sweaters, huge hats and oversized sunglasses…she’s said that she wore these mish-moshed costumes mostly to stay warm” - The official explanation for MK’s NYU outfits, in an interview with the Daily Telegraph.

Um totally CREEPY! My facebook status right now is about me looking like MK circa 2004, the NYU years. Minus the eating disorder. Crazy since I didn't read this interview b/4 I put up my status.

My life is full of "wtf" moments like this!

Mary kate and Ashley did a lot for fashion, especially for young people. Their look is criticized but it is undeniably cool and popped out perfectly timed with hipster trends and the rise of a sort of urban hippie. I love how fashion for young adults has no rules and doesn't necessarily require a lot of money. If some can't appreciate Mary Kate's "bag lady chic" look for its style credibility, still anyone can see how its made dressing hip and current more accessible and creative.

She dressed like every other downtown hipster during that era. She didn't invent the look and I'm sure she just adopted it because she thought it looked cool and she was hanging out with those kids.

She never had an actual "eating disorder" either, she had a hardcore cocaine addiction and thus she lost a lot of weight. Thus she went to rehab. The eating disorder was just a gentler way of explaining her rehab stint when her "exhaustion" excuse didn't fly.

yeah, I'm sure she didn't invent the look, it had been brewing for a while, but she had the guts to wear it and be photographed and criticized publicly.

Straight urban-outfitter hipster can be lame, but the more eclectic, individualistic look of mary-kate is definitely something to recognize and admire.

6:38 I think they mean that she was an icon before Ashley, not before anyone else was one.
