Kanye and Balenciaga: The Flipout

Mar 03, 2008 @ 1:20pm

05.jpg Earlier this week, the excellent Kanye West discovered what dozens of American fashion editors already know:

It's impossible to get a Balenciaga show ticket.

This eye-rolling bit of protocol was cheerily reported by the New York Times, and it caused a minor flip-out.

First, Balenciaga swore they'd never gotten a ticket request from Kanye.

Then Kanye politely assured them they did, via an official post on his website:

"I totally love and respect any designer that won't let me come 2 there show... it's their show... they don't owe me anything... Balenciaga is one of the illest lines right now and I don't feel any type of way about not getting in!

"There's always a catch 22 in being a celeb ... your motives are always questioned... but only time will show my true love MY FIRST LOVE is for fashion and I appreciate just being in a position 2 afford 2 be able 2 spend a week in Paris visiting shows. I wish everyone could have this experience, the new music you hear, the new people you meet and most of all the beautiful clothes! I understand that some designers don't want all that unnecessary commotion at there shows, that's what I mean by 'I get a lot of attention.' "

Although in the grand scheme of things, Kanye does get more attention than Balenciaga, so maybe they could squeeze him in next to Charlotte Gainsbourg...

Pssh He's KANYE. He doesn't need to follow the rules of grammar. Duh :)

I second the motion.

He just sounds like an idiot. For someone who plies his trade in words, he is surprisingly ineloquent.

oh forgive me for thinking he was a mere mortal who had to follow the same rules as the rest of us... ;)

No, seriously, is it that hard to write "to" instead of "2" over and over?

Why can't he write whatever and however on his OWN website?
certain things are not that serious...

syako-
no offense. but i doubt Kanye really cares about being ridiculed by somone who spends all their time posting comments on fashionista.com

were you in paris viewing the shows this season? make as much money/get as much fame as he has and you can use "2" or "there/their/they're" howeverrrrr you want...hr may not have the best typing grammer, but hes doing something right!

Doing something right in what sense? Is that what success and happiness means to you? Fame, money and fashion shows? Well then ok. But who are you to judge me and to assume what I think is success and happiness. AND, I don't expect him or anyone to read these comments in a "fashion blog" I just do it to kill time at work to be honest. And being a writer/journalist/designer grammAR and 2 or to and there/their/they're mean a whole lot to me.

And in what world could that comment be "no offense"

it is funny that you assume fame and money is the key to anything.

on the other hand, i hate spelling errors but like someone else said before, it is his website.

Oops, my other comment was an accident.

Anyway, just because someone makes more money or is more successful in a particular industry than me does not make them better or undeserving of criticism. Please people stop using this argument to defend your position. It makes my head hurt. I will never makes as much money as Jessica Simpson, but I can go to my grave happy that i never sold my self as a deliciously idiotic dumb blonde who flaunted her only asset in order to make money. Money and fame do not make a person superhuman. Kanye criticizes everyone it seems, and for him to be above it himself seems a little ridiculous. If Kanye doesn't care, good for him, we can still say it.

Kanye is allowed to spell however he wants being that it's his personal blog. You don't need to be a journalism major to have a blog. He didn't have to make a statement at all, the fact that he did comment on the situation- and cleared up the details- earns alot of respect in my book. Plus, there is more to the post. You can check it out here. http://www.kanyeuniversecity.com/blog/

I think a couple of you guys are being a kind of snippy for the sake of it. He's not my favourite person, but still. . . overall I thought his blog was positive and kind of sweet (it's nice to hear someone talk so happily about fashion week rather than complaining about standing around, late shows, and running from show to show). I mean, there's really no need for all the ridicule. If you don't like it, you can always (gasp), not read it. . .rather than sit behind your computer (at work) making snide remarks and wasting your company's time. What an amazing thought!

SYAKO STOP!!

Seriously? All you seem "2" do around here is criticize posts! (If anyone is interested you can click her profile and read all the anoying comments she leaves!) Just chill out ok? Or go back to FabSugar where you are a self-proclaimed "regular" (Must be one boring job you have, no? to have that much time to kill as you say? Dedicated "2" two fashion websites...tsk tsk what your boss would say!)

Perhaps you just envy most of us who work in fashion? And those of us who can use poor grammer and still view a YSL show? While you spend the day typing in your tiny cubicle using your hard-earned-grammer-appreciated-college-degree dreaming of a job in fashion you wish you had? It must make you real upset, no? To see illiterate, strange, and fashion sense-less people (as you commented regarding Cory Kennedy) not only spell however the hell they want, but also afford/wear Givenchy and dance the night away in Paris? Does judging the grammer of a Grammy winning musician, and the style of a 17 year old It Girl make you feel better about yourself? "Even if I can't call Marc on speed dial, or drink champagne at the Miu Miu store opening like them ATLEAST I can spell correctly!!" Is that what you tell yourself? SAD SAD SAD

Please dont come on this site to correct ones grammer, or tell Faran to fix her fonts! If you want things done YOUR way i'm sure there are plenty of domain names left for you to create your own site, and since you are SO intelligent i'm sure it will be amazing and error free :)

PS. Did you ever think that maybe, just maybe, he was updating his website via blackberry? Perhaps thats a way of shorthand? Think lady...

XOXO, Gossip Girl

To Jac:
I totally agree with your comments.
Too often, celebrity is confused with integrity.
These days, the two seem to be mutually exclusive.
(I also love your post pic!)

I agree with both views here - although Kanye's grammar is nauseating and almost seems trying to hard to be cool since "2" is the only shorthand/slang he employs, I think it's nice to see a celebrity conceding that they are not owed anything by anyone. Many seem to think their fame is limitless...

I found it really funny that the story was about Kanye not get in a Balenciaga show, and almost everyone had a comment about grammar. That is what he means when he says, "I get a lot of attention". People make such a big deal about any thing he does. Love him or hate him we all make him the attention getting celebrity he is especially the one's who hate him by pointing out every little thing he does.
