coco chanel did pioneer the use of jersey fabric for something other than men's underwear. it was considered cheap and slightly vulgar back then, but she used it in eveningwear.
so maybe it is coco?

I'm thinking Chanel too.
And yes, she popularized using jersey material for womans fashions which had previously only been used for mens undergarments.
I love cardigens, by the way. They are adorable :)

My guess is Tina Chow. She would wear men's cardigans with white t-shirts in the 80's. I remember Vogue did a feature on her during the Mirabella editorship. I must confess that this ensemble has not disappeared from my wardrobe. It's cold where I live!

Is that Vlada in the pic? she looks gorgeous. The dark circles/bags under her eyes generally bother me, but either they photoshopped it out or she's doing better.

If cardigans weren't popularized until the 1980's, then what would account for all the Norman Rockwells of teenage girls in fluffy pink cardigans in 1950's soda shops?...
Chanel popularized lots of men's sportswear for women, I wouldn't be surprised if the cardigan was also her handiwork.
