Step By Step, Ooh Baby

Mar 31, 2008 @ 10:30am

sienna miller heidi braid.jpgI promised you a Heidi braid how to, so I've done my best to capture the process in pictures.

I personally think pretty much every hair style, whether up or down, looks better just a little bit messy - random out of place wisps and the occasional lump add character. Plus, by the time it's warm out, I'd rather spend the extra five minutes on something other than my hair.

So here I am, on my balcony, with almost dirty, definitely messy hair, 4 bobby pins and no mirror. If I hadn't stopped to let my roommate snap a picture of each step it would have taken one minute. I swear.

But, I have pretty thin hair, so the thicker your mane the more complicated and time consuming this look can get.

It's really easy. I promise.

Oh, and please excuse the super tacky chipped nail polish. I'm embarrassed.

Step 1: Have long hair - preferably dirty and definitely not sleek and straight - and depending on hair thickness anywhere from a couple to a handful of bobby pins.

Step 2: Split hair down the middle. Even if you part it on the side, try and get an even amount on each side or else you'll look lopsided. Braid each side, the lumpier the better.
step2.JPG
Step 3: Pull one braid over.
step4.JPG
Step 4: Pin.
step5.JPG
Step 5: Pull the other braid over and pin it parallel to the first.

Step 6: Voila!

If you have thin hair, then I must be bald! You've got just the perfect amount for this type of hairstyle. Thanks for this helpful post. :)

Yeah, my hair is definitely too thick for this (maybe my people --Asians-- aren't meant to have Heidi braids), but it's super cute on you!

Looks great -- but I can't pull it off myself :( I have thick, wavy/curly hair. The texture is less an issue than the thickness, not that I dislike it. Just... no Heidi braids for me, but I really like the look!

That looks great! I would never be able to pull off such a hairstyle even though I have hair just like yours...

If you're hair is too short/layered/thick for this style, as mine is, try this look:

Your hair is so beautiful! I wish mine weren't so thick! I'd probably wear this style every day.

Super cute. I've got a blunt type fringe and I'm going to see if I can pull of the Heidi braids with it as soon as I get home!

how do u get tiny little pins to hold up a heavy, head-full of hair? because it certainly doesn't work for me. i've got about 20 of those tiny jiggers in there and i still look like that evil queen from star wars.

If you start with your hair in relatively high pigtails, braid them upwards, and then take the "base" elastic out it gives you a few more inches. This is especially helpful if you have a lot of layers because while you are braiding the pigtails you can make sure each section has both long and short pieces so that the short pieces can be tucked in. It also prevents bulking at the top of the braid when you flip them up, if you have thick hair.

yeah you left out the most important step: start with an absolutely gorgeous head of lovely hair - like yours. Nice work!

This DIY is so excellent! I WISH my hair was long enough for Heidi braids. I'm spreading the word to friends with long hair in order to live vicariously through them.

Hah, WWWD, such biters! and apparently I am a little behind the curve also. Surprisingly, no one seems to wear the Heidi braid in California, and I don't think I could pull it off :( Its super cute though, I'm jealous ;)
