Target's Cheap Chic is Also for Designers?

Mar 11, 2008 @ 10:54am

libertine-target.jpg Today's hot whisper:

That Target only pays about $200,000 for designers to create their diffusion collection.

That's around 16 Proenza Schouler dresses, 6 Temperley peacoats, 2 Libertine ballgowns, or 5 Luella handbags.

Hmm.

i doubt it...they get paid a royalty rate per garment as well as an upfront fee...

its rumoured that proenza schouler got paid the most however...

It's cheaper than I would've thought ... but it must be taken into account how much the designers get out of this too. Major print and TV advertising, international press and instant name-recognition. Plus every designer that's done a collection for them has commented on how much they learned from the mass-retailer about smart production and sourcing. All that and a few hundred grand? Not bad.

if that's true, it's nice to know that designers care more about bringing their clothes to the masses than about the money.

um...i think that's some fuzzy math...last time i checked, $200,000 for 5 handbags equaled $40,000 apiece...

the photo's shown above are old, it was Libertine for Target last year... I heard that Payless pays their designers $40 000 plus royalties...you'd be surprised how many well known designers are close to bankrupcy, just because they get worn by celebrities or in magazines, does not mean they are doing financially well. I think $200 000 in cold hard cash does them much good, plus the press coverage is priceless making lesser known designers household names and paving the way for diffusion brands that pay the bills.
