The Comics Are Coming...

Mar 17, 2008 @ 4:37pm

pop print.jpgMonths after the Costume Institute announces it's big ball theme - Comic Book Chic - and already we're seeing it reverberate in the mass market.

To the left is an upcoming print from Puma; to the right is a hoodie from Topshop. They're almost identical, and they're not the only Pop prints you'll see this Spring and Summer.

This is on top of the runway masks at Marc, Luella, and Alexander McQueen, and past the editorials in Bazaar and V that literally turn comic books into fashion spreads.

And if Vogue isn't sponsoring a Lichtenstein exhibit in the next year, then our Magic 8 Ball is totally, totally busted.

Oh come on, Guest@17 Mar...! The influence of comic books has sort of been around for some time, but not really endorsed by the big names. Manga comics have always been a huge fashion influencer, especially in Asian countries.

This had to happen. Really. I mean, look at Hollywood! Sin City, 300, History Of Violence... Graphic novels have dominated the pop culture scene for quite sometime now. So this comes as no surprise. The hoodies were a flash in the pan. This... is going to just get bigger. And bigger.

frankly, i think theyre running out of themes for the met gala. theyre starting to sound like a sorority theme party committee. next year's theme should be sesame street chic! or 80's prom! lol.

This whole comic thing is not directed to the true fashion followers after all. If you were a true fashionista, you should already be into the NEXT trend, not even talking about something that has been around for the past wo years. the Met just reflects what pop culture did in the past few months. Can we move on? Thanks.
