Wingtips: Not Just For Eyeliner

Mar 18, 2008 @ 1:37pm

wingtips.jpgWe've always associated wingtips, oxfords, spectators, and loafers, with men, and maybe poodle skirts.

Until recently, that is. Not long ago, we started seeing "inspired by men's shoes" all over the place, mostly in the form of a lace-up oxford, and always with a heel.

Now, both on the runway and on the street, we're seeing girls in actual men's shoes paired with feminine dresses.

They're a kind of sleek and sophisticated look without being too rough or too hard to pull off, and make us want to use words like "dapper," "dandy" and "the bees knees".

But since we've only found a few that are made in women's sizes, we may have to take to the Boy's shoe department to get exactly what we're after...

I got a pair of patent leather black 'brogues' (also called oxfords) from Pied a terre in London last spring. They are the typical male look but they look very stylish/trendy on with patterned tights, a short skirt and crested blazer. They might be carrying them again this season.

i can't believe you gals are barely talking about oxfords/ wingtips!!

SWEAR of London has
great unisex styles though, that
are versatile. The only place
I know that sells them is @
Opening Ceremony.

I got a few pairs on Ebay last year and some at the flea markets and always get complimented on them.
I think Henri Cuir makes some nice ones with a heel as well?

I wear saddle shoes with skinny jeans, skirts, and dresses. They fact they're they're vintage and that no one else wears them around the city makes them look less cutesy and more chic.

I would try re-sale shops.

My sister got a great pair of menswear-inspired shoes for about $9 at Salvation Army a few months ago that are in great condition (I've actually been working on breaking them in). I can't recall if they're more like oxfords or wingtips, but the vamp is lower than one would see on a men's shoe, so they've got a bit of a jazz shoe feel to them.

I've been wearing men's oxfords for at least a decade. I find that if you have large flat feet, like I do, it is much easier to wear interesting old men's shoes and still be stylish and comfortable than trying to squish my size 11 (and sometimes 12) feet into pointy "cool" shoes.
