forever21 jonathansaunders.jpgForever 21's returned to designer archives for their latest batch of dresses we've seen before.

Reader Jessica e-mailed this tiered shift dress with a black bodice and a layered skirt in the prettiest retro, (Marc Jacobs?) colors. We actually love the dress.

Too bad its design was snatched off Jonathan Saunders' Fall '07 runway.

The skirt's fabric's a bit flouncier and they were courteous enough to change the color of the bottom layer from a vivid yellow to a buttery shade.

We know being copied is the highest form of flattery, but somehow we don't think Jonathan would be too thrilled.

i wonder why you consistently call out forever 21 for ripping off designers, however you are all topshop mad and they do the same! don't get me wrong, i am british and love topshop, but they are also guilty of stealing designs straight off the runway. (their replica of the infamous roland mouret 'galaxy dress' a few years back comes to mind..and that's just the start.)

all this rage over copycat fashion...it kind of makes me sad a little bit.

i mean, if it's all about being anti-sweatshops then why is it only an issue if it's a sweatshop that makes designer knockoffs? isn't a sweatshop bad no matter what the product is???

and if it's something else--anger over ripping off designers' styles, then i feel like maybe we should all lighten up just a bit...just a little. if you are wealthy enough to afford the original, high-priced designer item then good for you. but forever21 isn't making the cheap knock-off version for the richie-riches, they're making it for the rest of us little people who can't afford expensive clothes without going into serious debt to do so.

i'm really sorry, i'm not trying to stir up a big, fat debate or anything, and i probably should just delete this whole message and keep my thoughts to myself. but i just feel so sad over all the negativity in the world and feel that fashion is generally supposed to be something fun and enjoyable--not tattling on who's copying whom.

then again, maybe i'm just sensitive because i am one of the poor, lowly folks who really loves fashion but sadly can't afford the beautiful designs i see and admire so much in magazines.

Can anyone tell me how the sizing runs at forever 21? I am looking to buy a dress online (not this one) and usually fall between a small/medium (size 4/6) but since everything fits so differently, I was hoping someone here could give a little advice.

the sizing is pretty true to size (in terms of juniors sizing) for dresses. if the dress is supposed to be slim fitting, and you're not the lean model type, i'd go up to a med. but if you're a true small, you'd be a true small. their fluffier billowy dresses run a little large

I e-mailed this a week or two ago. I actually think it's pretty cute considering it's Forever21.

I kinda like the F21 dress better as well...it seems like it would camouflage the hip area better. Plus, the toned down yellow is nicer. I just wish they had made this dress in silk rather than polyester.

I wind up buying a lot of stuff at F21 because so much higher end stuff is so poorly made. I tried on an ABS dress at Neiman's the other day, and it was really cute, but it was also completely made out of polyester. Granted, ABS isn't super-high end, but if I'm going to buy a dress for $250, I want it to at least not reek of my dinner later at drinks. If I something trendy, cute, but not well-made, I might as well spend $25 at F21 instead.

Poster at 12:52 -- so true! Top Shop is probably worse in terms of ripping off designs. Its better quality and has cache in the fashion world so editors don't like to seem like they are criticizing something so universally recognized as cool. Forever 21 and Steve are easy targets--they always take the cheap shots first on this site.

to anyone who thinks that these knockoffs are ok because you can't afford the real thing:
life isn't about having everything you want. if you can't afford it, don't get it. don't get the fake, because if everyone bought the knockoffs, there would be no originals to ripoff.

obviously, most of you aren't REALLY grasping what fashion really is, EVERYTHING
in stores [epecially forever 21] comes from
inspiration from designers, it is very well explained in the devil wears parada remember? targeted at the middle class people who can't afford high-end clothing... poster 11:21 why NOT buy something that looks like the real thing?
you obviously think that you're only original if you have high-end clothing...so that just tells me that you have little imagination and no real love for fashion...
because fashion is just, abstract.

fyi, i wore the f21 version to work today, and my (guy) friend told me i look like the german flag. at which point my other (guy) friend chimed in, "you look like a nazi."

if i had paid like $500 for this dress, i'd be really ticked off.

and that, my friends, is the best argument i have for "accessible" fashion.

I saw Amanda Bynes wearing this dress last night. For a straight man who is learning about fashion, I got giddy because I knew who she was wearing thanks to this post. She looked great in the dress by the way. It was a short dress, and with the yellow part being sheer, it was quite sexy.
