Adventures in Copyrights: Double the Miu Miu, Double the Fun

Apr 14, 2008 @ 11:39am

miu miu etc.jpg In February, 2006, Jessica Stam opened the Miu Miu show in a shapeless yellow silk sack with giant black stars stamped all over it.

It was a defining moment for Miu Miu because it was sort of a wakeup call:

Whoa, we all said, This is really young, and really hip, and way underrated, isn't it?

It was also the season that Miu Miu prices positively skyrocketed, to the point where a M.M. bag cost the same, if not more, than a Prada bag of the same size - and this was shocking, and a bit obnoxious, considering that Miu Miu is supposed to be the secondary line. What if a Marc by Marc bag cost $1000?

Anyway, yesterday we were walking down 11th St. in the East Village and we see this dress by Min-K - whom you may remember for making the insane Cameron Diaz "best dressed" frock of last year, as well as a series of Lindsay/ Sienna tops that the two wore as dresses, with tights.

This time, Min-K is not offering a starlet cover-up, but instead a knock off of Jessica Stam's Miu Miu dress. It would be darling on its own, but alas.

There's always a kind of moral dilemma that happens when you see a knock off of something you can't buy anymore, because you're like, "But it's not on sale now, so why not?"

Perhaps we should ask The Ethicist.

i don't think it's a knock off. it doesn't have the same design/shape as the MiuMiu one. it has the same print, but different fabric. you can't prosecute someone for using a print that another brand has used. what's the big deal anyway?

miss min-k was prolly looking for inspiration on style.com and figured nobody would make the connection. It is a great print, so there is no wonder why both chose to use it in the first place, but those designers all know exactly what they are doing!

it's hardly a knock off. it's not the same shape or design, the only thing that's really similar are the colors and print.

Fabrics can be made in excess. Because it's the same print doesn't mean someone can't reinterpret the shape or style of how to use the fabric. I think this goes for a lot of copies and dupes.

uhh...

1. different shape

2. different neckline

3. belt

4. different pattern - look closely, the min k one is not stars. maybe they look similar when they are viewed from far away but they're not the same.

5. different shade of yellow.

not a knock off, imo!

Is it bad that I prefer the Min-K? When I first saw the Miu Miu dress I thought it was kind of tacky. Then a while later I actually saw someone wearing it and it was very clear to me that the only person who shoulsd wear that dress is Jessica Stam.

pray tell, why so knock-off sensitive, fashionista?! everything, EVERYTHING, everything is a knock off of some kind or another. and i agree with comments above-- this is not a technical knock off (TKO).

I have to agree with most people on this post. I don't think this is a knock off. Along with it being a completely different silhouette, the print is not the same. It's similar, but that could be completely coincidental. I mean, aren't stars popular this season anyways?

is min-k actually a line, or just a store? i don't know much about it, but i've been in the store, and my impression was that they were mainly dresses from shops in korea or somewhere in asia that were brought over and then had the prices jacked up.

this looks like min-k's company just used the same print as miu miu..and since the print must not be miu miu copyrighted (ie the company that printed it sold it to many "designers" it's not a knock-off. the dress is completely different. does anyone who actually knows about how fashion design and the business aspect of it actually work for this blog?
