And Now, Animal Bags

Apr 11, 2008 @ 9:00am

Bunny Backpack.jpgWe've been documenting the return of the 90's (backpacks, Chloe's OC line, crop tops) with genuine fervor lately, and we have another one to add to the list -

Stuffed animal bags.

Yesterday, we spotted an otherwise chic woman lingering outside Cafe Gitane on Mott Street. She was an otherwise normal-looking person except that she had a dog-shaped purse under her arm. Not a fuzzy wuzzy kind of pup, more like a taxidermic-looking version that we really did mistake for a real - albeit completely stiff - dog that she for some reason was carrying on her shoulder with a strap.

We had kind of a funny discussion about animal backpacks in the office not too long ago, an offshoot of a Clueless discussion. Did you used to have one? Would you wear one? What if it was a bunny, like Stella's for LeSportsac? But we had no idea this look had taken to the streets.

Has anyone else seen this?

[Semi-related note: We went to see The Wackness yesterday, mostly because we were curious to see what MK would look like with dreads (overstatement - more like messy braids), and it was amazing, mostly because we have never missed the 90's more than when we left our seats. Olivia Thirlby wore kinky hair and door knockers, and we have to say, it didn't look Lily Allen so much as just what we thought "cool" was in 4th grade. Summer 2008 style inspiration?]

I know what dog purses you're talking about! They're so creepy. They come in all different types of dog.

I was wondering what kind of person would actually carry something so awful.

I wore those in elementary school. I think that's the only appropriate age to wear them.

Oh boy! I wore these in elementary school as well! Not a good look if you’re over 12. I actually saw a lady wearing a stuffed bear on the subway the other day, it was a bit weird, but hey, I’m all for it! If it made her feel good than that’s great, but I most defiantly don’t think I would ever wear these again.

I've seen that same lady in a store on Mulberry! She was telling the bemused shop owner that she'd started a business making those bags and was trying to get the store to carry them. I wish I could remember her website, but all of the bags were very expensive and very creepy.

hey kijjalyn, no, it was REALLY life-like. i honestly thought it was a real dog at first. my first thought was, "why is that woman carrying a dog that's trying to jump?" seriously.

I have a big bunny backpack that used to wear all the time when I was a kid. I think I still have it and it's so cute that I am almost tempted to wear it. Almost.

I'm intrigued by these extremely lifelike purses. I've never seen one.

I know I wouldn't carry one that looked like a stuffed animal anymore -- though the ones kijjalyn posted would have been awesome when I was 14. The bulldog would have been great back then.

I had a ragdoll backpack in kindergarten. I think those and any stuffed animal bags should be left to those under the age of 10.

I can't imagine anyone carrying a pseudo-taxidermied dog around with their stuff in it.

I had one. I've been looking for a pug one,not to actually use as a bag though. More for sentimental reasons.

Isn't the creepy bag (that hyst gave the link to) more of an artistic comment on the status bag and status animal than an actual piece of fashion? I could be wrong...

ewww... this is just bad unless you are a 3rd grader. I saw some lawyer in my building whom had one, and I nearly started laughing out load. Instead I remained composed and just rolled my eyes.

Cute if you're a little kid. Other than that, I think they are almost too...rave or something.
