Polka Dot Me Please

lilyinluella.jpgApparently, guys love a girl in polka dots.

We learned this fun fact last week after a friend professed his love for the dots’ retro vibe, which in turn made us wonder whether he loved the actual spots or just the 50’s housewife look it connotes.

So we asked around this weekend, and yes, apparently they love a buttoned up, full skirted, high-heeled woman. Brett even remembers Matthew Broderick saying he preferred a woman in a Stepford Wife-like outfit, (obviously interesting in and of itself since his wife dresses like anything but), and he distinctly recalls a GQ spread in which men professed their love for the women on the Food Network in part because yes - they can cook, but also because they’re beautiful and dress conservatively.

The message appears to be that guys don’t like girls who dress like Posh or Carrie Bradshaw but want a girl who looks more like Katie Holmes or Charlotte York - and polka dots are an added bonus.

We’re wondering though, can stars replace polka dots? Because we’re really obsessed with this romper and we’re pretty sure every guy we know would think we’d lost it if we started wearing it around.

But if it was spotted - well apparently it’d be ok?

ah yes, nothing like a sweeping generalization of the straight male's mind.

I can speak for my husband that while he loves that I cook, he despises my conservative outfits. So he doesn't fit the mold apparently. He'd much rather posh than charlotte (wardrobe-speaking)

And as to the romper, just buy it! ;)

That romper is ADORABLE! I mean, really adorable. Besides how great it would be at a fourth of july bbq?! You should definitely buy and rock it. Guys are (usually) pretty stupid about everything.

I can't believe someone liked that crazy Chanel star-spangled romper enough to rip it off!

hmm, didn't Chanel do a romper with stars on it? Or am I imagining things? Very possible, it's 1130 pm here and I have loads of homework left to do for tomorrow.

Anyway, I love (pretty much) anything with stars on it. Boys are stupid. Go for it.

Ofcourse guys think that the 1950's housewife look is sexy because guys are socialized to think that the 1950's housewife is the ideal woman. With that said, I look nothing like a 1950's housewife and I'm pretty confident that I make suspenders look sexy any day.

On another note, that jumpsuit is tacky. I can see the tacky bitches along the Charles River (im in Boston) wearing that shit on the 4th of July.

I say GET THE ROMPER, no matter WHO else likes it! As long as you love it, then it's meant to be (that's actually my theory on a lot of things in life)...

...as for the polka dots, I watched "Because I Said So" last night (not a wonderful film, but I'm a sucker for Mandy Moore) and there was a whole thing about polka dots and men enjoying them. I happen to like them as well (men, and polka dots, just not men IN polka dots....) I bought a navy sundress with white polka dots last year and wore it with a yellow cropped cardigan... guess my conservative Connecticut roots reared their ugly head!!

Hubby prefers funky, punky styles, but when it comes to shapes, will ALWAYS chose the style that shows off my waist. It's nothing about wanting some 50s personality, just that he thinks womanly shapes are sexy. I don't think the fascination with the 50s look is so much about the stereotype of women back then as the fact that fashion designers emphasized what's sexy about our bodies (curves) instead of hiding us in babydolls and bubble hems.

Oh, about men liking women who cook? Of course they do. And most women I know like men who cook. Go figure :)

I think polka dots are a good look as long as they aren't too costume-y a la Minnie Mouse

Oh hell no!

This is why men should not be asked when it comes to fashion and dressing!

I will take Beckham and Bradshaw over Holmes and York every single time!

But honestly who cares?I hate restrictions, women should wear what they want to, polka dots or leather pants, just be true to yourself.

I think what goes through most guy's minds about women's clothes is, 'If I say I like it, will I get some?' The actual outfit itself is pretty much irrelevant. Sooo....
If you love an outfit, buy it!
The way a woman feels in an outfit she loves is what determines what's sexy or fabulous about it. Just my opinion...
