Crop Tops, Really?

oak crop top.jpgWhen people started mentioning crop tops to us recently, we thought, “No way,” even though American Apparel’s been holding a torch for it for some time.

When we saw some added to Oak’s site this morning, we thought, “Maybe it’s a mirage.”

But when Jazzi told us she saw a girl wearing a red cotton version in the West Village yesterday, we realized that this needs to be addressed.

We can’t really say that we know when this started to come back (is it really coming back?) Maybe it’s a part of the whole return of the 90’s thing (Rachel Green was a big style icon then), or maybe everybody’s over modesty, but we can’t help but think that this one’s a little too early-career Britney and maybe downright ugly to seriously wear outside of the house.

Maybe we could see it with something very high-waisted…? Or over a body suit or clingy tee? Otherwise, we don’t plan on wearing it.

But more importantly, do you?

I've gotten so used to keeping my pale tummy private.

Maybe if they're cut a little more flattering than the pictured Oak top. You know it's bad when the model doesn't look too hot in it.

Speaking of the 90's....Naomi Cambell has just been arrested. People.com has the scoop!

when I used to work at american apparel, we would play dress up all the time. One time I put on their track version of the half-tee and thought I looked cute for two seconds before the fact that I was wearing half of a t-shirt hit me. needless to say, I quickly put the thing back on the rack and moved on.

bare midriff is so cool. bare tummy... not so.

i've worn cropped cardigans and tees with super-high-waisted jeans and pencil skirts, and i like it. i also like the idea of a bandeau top (not from american apparel, thank you) under a sheer tee, also with something high-waisted, for a more this-millennium take on the crop.

Please...god.....Noooo! How horrendous. It reminds me of the redneck town 5 minutes away from my own chic college town in Northern California. I do not want to picture other UC Davis students walking around with their beer-bellies hanging out more than they already are....however I hope myself and the other textile/clothing students can influence this away...

Guest @4:01,

Hey fellow Aggie! What, you don't want to see fellow students walking around in the style of people from Woodland or perhaps even, Dixon?

I also vote no no no no.

I really, really hope this is not true. I've seen enough fat guts hanging out of low-rise jeans to last me a couple of lifetimes. I don't need to see them portruding from cut-off shirts too. Please, please say it isn't so because it's more that I can bear this summer.

In summers past I have worn fat bikers t-shirts (wolves, motorbikes, skulls etc) which I've fashioned nito halternecks and tied up at the waist. I actually think it's pretty hick-chic.

Blame Chloe Sevigny!! And yes, I haven't found the right top yet, but I think a crop top with high waisted jeans might be a great casual ensemble!

everything comes back. everything. even the really ugly styles [as championed by every fake-glasses-sporting hipster around - see every bad 80s trend ever, from snazzily patterned leggings to horrible shoulder-padded jackets - Vogue's endorsement of the 'statement jacket' a coupla months back, anyone?]. we may not like it, but crop-tops will be back, and some of us will even be cajoled into wearing them. magazines will hum with articles on how to 'tone that tummy'.

it's a sad inevitability.
