DIY: Yo Yo Ma Headband!

Apr 30, 2008 @ 1:08pm

DIY headband pull.jpgI was having lunch with my friend Kristina, fellow FIT student and shop girl extraordinaire, and I couldn't take my eyes off her Wohl-worthy headband.

Not quite as structured as Blair's, but a little less lounging-in-capri than a headscarf, it seemed like a great way to hold back last season's bangs that you're desperately trying to grow out before summer.

And the best part? Like a true Teen Vogue subscriber, she made it herself.

Here's how...

--BRETT KANE

What you’ll need:

-An old cotton mix t-shirt, something with a bit of stretch - or, for a more colorful version, try using several different bright tees
-Sewing Needle
-Spool of thread
-Scissors, fabric shears, or rotary cutter: whatever you have laying around

Step one:
Cut one long strip of fabric off bottom of t-shirt, a few inches from hem. Width depends on personal preference of thickness for headband. Or, simply whip out a cotton/ jersey headband, already pre-made!

Step two:
Cut 5 circles, each about 4 inches in diameter, out of remaining t-shirt material. Experimentation with different sized circles is a must!

Step three:
Fold about ¼-inch of each circle’s edge over, and stitch around the entire circumference. Leave a bit of thread at the end, and… 1, 2, 3 Pull! An instant fabric rosette!

Step four:
After you've made all your little rosettes, simply stitch them in a mound on the side of the headband, or wherever you please!

Step five:
You have a few choices here - you can either mark off where the headband part needs to be cut and stitched together to fit around your head, or, you could simply decide that you'll always just tie it in place, or pin it to size.

Step six:
Wrap around head, and look at you! All ready for a day out and about!

Very adorable, but I hate this headband trend. (Though I appreciate the arts and crafts!)

Please stop talking about how headbands can be used to "hold back last season's bangs" -
Its getting a little trite

{see Mar. 26, 'GG crosses the pond' post - "Stock up on head accessories (think bejeweled headbands, scarves, big barrettes) now before everybody else decides they're Blair and shows up to work glittering with Stacey Lapidus holding back last season's bangs."}
