Heidi Sells Out

Monday, Apr 28, 2008 / 12:46 PM

handw.jpgHeidi Klum graced the pages of the new Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.
The beloved annual spread is half swimsuit catalogue for women, half eye candy for men. (Yes, apparently over 28 million women read “the Academy Awards” of swim wear fashion.)
In this edition, Heidi wears a suit by Red Carter, and now the label’s profits are up 60% from this time last year and they’ve already sold 400 of the $137 bikini Heidi wears.
When we saw Heidi posing with Will Ferrell, all we could think was, wait, Heidi Klum’s a model? While the fashion industry devotes its love to the Tanyas, Natalias and Jourdans of its world, everyone else has made Heidi Klum the face of fashion.
Us Weekly just named her Style Icon of the Year and now even Bloomberg’s reporting on the fact that whatever you put on her body will sell out in minutes.
Is it just us, or was her faux Van Cleef clover jewelry enough to discredit her style icon status?

I love Heidi! She’s gorgeous and has a great personality. I love this spread too, it’s such an odd match that it works!

She is pretty much today’s Rachel Hunter or Kathy Ireland.
You know, what boys who watch baseball think a supermodel is.

you guys are such snobbies. it’s HEIDI KLUM. And don’t even try to dis her jewelry line – we all know you fashionista snobs are suckers for faux fashion.

great body, but heidi klum is such a dull woman. Not a fashion icon, no big deal.

How is sports illustrated any more “selling out” than victoria’s secret? Or, for that matter, hosting a reality television show.

So she’s not a “fashion icon” on the order of Kate Moss, but she is a very recognizable model all over the US. We might love Agyness but she is not a recognizable face in most of this country. Heidi is funny and playful in her pictures and seems accessible–and has made the process of fashion a little more accessible to a lot of people across the country. I am willing to overlook an ugly jewelry line for those positives.

I think/hope that the “heidi sells out” headline is a reference to the Bloomberg article, which Britt summarizes as “the fact that whatever you put on her body will sell out in minutes.” Could also be a subtle dis, but maybe not.

I think Heidi is fab! She’s not Kate Moss Agyness or Coco Rocha (Coco looks amazing walking thru the city), Heidi is a throwback to when models had curvy bodies.

this is so old!

Oddly enough, 3 separate times I have been watching Project Runway randomly with someone who has remarked “That blonde woman is really pretty.” I’m like, of course, that’s Heidi Klum! She’s just so stunning, of course women want to emulate that.

Thanks to PR, every time I see Heidi I hear “Neeeeeena Garcia.” :)
Anwyway, I saw Heidi in those behind-the-scenes of PR and she was actually enjoyable and lively. It’s the one where Christian and Tim Gunn have a walk-off. It’s worth watching just for that alone.

i love heidi, but she only /used/ to have curves. since her last baby she’s been skinny skinny skinny–like today’s top girls.

Wow, lots of support for HK! Well, to me, a supermodel is a catwalk model. Naomi, Cindy, Linda, Christy, Claudia…they were the original supermodels and they were all about high fashion. So when I read that people like Rachel Hunter, Heidi Klum, Elle McPherson are ‘supermodels’, well I’m sorry, I don’t buy it. They are just models, or in this day and age I dunno, ‘model-personalities’ maybe? Anyway, clearly to the rest of the world (ie non-fashionistas) it doesn’t matter what you call them, they just like pretty girls!

duuude disneyrollergirl you must have memory loss: elle macpherson appeared in every elle for six years straight. if that isnt supermodel material than i dont know what is. (i know she was married to gilles for part of that, whatever).
and to me a supermodel isnt just a catwalker–it is someone with a personality that carries beyond the catwalk or magazine. obviously linda and the girls had that, but nowadays the tanyas of the world dont have any personality(disregarding aggy of course. im just saying i am sick of actresses ruling the ads and magazine covers, i want models back!

Her jewelry is hideous..nothing can compare to van cleef, though im saying that even though it is way out of my price range.

…and she’s had 2 kids.no fair.but while she may be some kind of fashion icon(?),her jewellery ain’t.it was out before it was ever in.what a waste.
