We probably haven’t watched PBS since the last time we tuned in for Sesame Street, but we think we might have to forgo TiVo’ed Gossip Girl episodes for a little educational broadcasting tonight.
Illicit: The Dark Trade, a National Geographic Special, airs at 8pm EST, and we’re too curious to not see how deep into the world of fake bags it’ll go.
The documentary is based on the 2005 best seller Illicit, by Foreign Policy Editor-in-Chief Dr. Moisés Na√≠m, who thinks that the economy surrounding fake goods could be more dangerous than terrorism – definitely comes off as an overstatement, but maybe we’ll understand after we see it tonight.
And if it sounds like enough of you tune in, too, maybe we’ll even have a little class discussion in Community tomorrow.
For now, we just think it’s too bad it couldn’t premiere in tandem with the Murakami exhibit.

I’m not going to lie. When I had no money, was younger, and didn’t know anything about fashion, I bought fakes. It’s so tempting. There, for less than twenty bucks, the current disposable trend. Especially when you have no idea where the money is going, or where the merchandise comes from. I’m definitely tuning in!

Ooh, please do a discussion! I’m going to law school in hopes of working in fashion trademarking, so I eat this kind of stuff up.

Ooh, thanks for the heads up. I freaked out just now because it’s past 8 EST, but it turns out they’re not airing it where I am ’till Friday. Shall tune in then…
I don’t have a blatant fake (well, no logos), but I have got a couple of imitations/”inspired by”s – one from Target and one from (drum roll, please) Forever 21. Both of which I jumped on ’cause I like the orginals so much.
Yeah, it feels kinda cheap, but that pretty much wears off.
I will say, though, that since I started reading Fashionista a year ago, I’ve been much more turned off by the whole imitation thing (and fast fashion in general). So yay!
