The Mac Anna'll Make You Jump, Jump

Apr 22, 2008 @ 3:07pm

Ok, we're a little pissed we didn't get to this first, but alas, we haven't yet jumped (ha) into the world of video, so we're glad someone else got around to compiling every single image in which Anna told Caroline, "Jump!"

It's gotten to such an extreme that there's even a picture of Caroline jumping smack in the middle of the wall between our desks with a big 'X' through it saying, "No More Jumping Caroline!!!"

But we secretly love it.

If we'd made the video, we would've set it to Kris Kross, but at least we know the lyrics well enough to sing, "Jump, Jump!" in our head.

What's the deal with putting Chanel Iman on blast for that, it's not like it's her fault.

uhh no, it's whoever made that video/image's fault. it's messed up. of them.

Just to clarify, Chanel Iman is a successful model who has a name. The people who made the video took the time out to find every pic of Caroline jumping, but cannot find out the name of the one black model.

Their attitude is dismissive and disgusting. And like the previous poster said, NOT CUTE.

The Chanel situation is not funny, ignorant people.

Hilariously fantastic! I like the slice of THE GOSSIP, but I too would've used Kris Kross.

While watching the video, Tyra was in my head talking about the girls doing very editorial "jumping" pictures!

That is so going to be a challenge next year!

"Token" as in the token black a la south park? wow. that's the only thing I remember from that video.
Provocative or lame?

I don't think they are being disrespectful of Chanel or black models. They are pointing out that Vogue has ONLY ONE black model in the whole group. She is the "token black model."

it's tongue and cheek.

unruffle yourselves and calm down.

and maybe more people should be asking where all the diversity is within Vogue.

(and the fashion industry in general.)

Well they need to refine their "tongue and cheek" -ness, because it does not go over well at all. They've got this whole light hearted "OMG WE LUV CAROLINE OMG!11!!!!" and then this crap at the end. Simply uncalled for.

I'm black and I don't find that token bit offensive, I just think it's a way of showing the state of fashion in a cynical way. It was definitely to make viewers think about WHY she would be labelled token.
Everyone knows chanel iman is, because she's one of like... 3 well known black models of the moment. It's not ignorance, it's meant to be thought provoking.

@4:22pm

I think you're giving them WAY too much credit. You probably put more thought into why they did it than they actually did.

guest @ 4.21: you're missing the point. It's supposed to highlight who gets all the focus in the industry, while iman is just as accomplished as trentini yet she doesn't get nearly as many ads, editorials etc. From what I took from the video its more about inciting change than overlooking the model by labelling her token.
What I do know is everyone is taking this way too seriously in the wrong way. It's "sad" funny when considering that the industry conditions have made iman that token black girl.

I was too busy singing the songs that I totally missed the "token" comment everyone is talking about. Hmmmm. Probably not the most appropriate thing to say.

To guest at 4:22, not all black people share the same opinions, as goes for all ethnicities and cultures. There is not one definitive thought process or discourse. Understandably people are offended.

the video creator obviously knows who chanel iman is...

there is a token for every minority that there is, and the creator is merely showing (as someone else mentioned) that vogue lacks diversity. it has nothing to do with going against black people or chanel iman. everyone jumps on the 'im offended' bandwagon way too quickly these days.

calm down touchy heatherchandler. among "token" was "angelina jolie" and "i heart aggy" - clearly not their names either.

and since when was the word "token" more offensive than the word "bitches" - it speaks volumes on what people choose to be offended about these days.

it's all supposed to be funny, and i'm sure the maker of this video didn't sit around thinking how they could offend all the avid readers of fashionista. it's a youtube posting by some unknown for pete's sake.

@ 5:28

No need to add "touchy", HeatherChandler will do just fine.

I don't know where you got the "bitches" comment, so I'll just ignore it.

My point is that it isn't "funny". Not everybody has the ability to be witty and ironic - case in point.

understood, but most black people can recognize the intention behind a comment. That comment wasn't meant to hurt, and many people who've posted here have no sense of humor or irony, cynism whatever you want to call it. Everyone's so quick to jump onto calling a comment racist or degrading or what have you, when it's just intended as comedy. It is possible to be overly politically correct... That's why there are shows like the Daily show and the colbert report to bring things back to perspective for some of us.

I think that that "bitches" comment had to do with the fact that the little speech bubble said "'sup bitches" or something like that.

I agree with 10:32pm - it's funny. I think that Heatherchandler is being a little uptight though. She's posted on responses to her own comments three times already and is probably monitering the posts still...

I think the whole video is meant to point out how blah Vogue is...I mean, seriously! That many spreads of one model jumping is insane. It just shows the entire lack of creativity over there.

And I agree with the posters who have pointed out that the author was simply trying to point out the "token" minority in the shot, again carrying the theme of the same old crap... ie same white girl jumping every month, which is the point of the whole video.

It should come as no shock that your shoots actually LOOK more interesting when you have different looking people in them!

I agree with 'southweststyle'...video maker was pointing out how pathetic and lacking in diversity Vogue (& every other glossy in that spectrum) is. I find another story here altogether which is that Anna doesn't tell anyone, besides her assistants, to jump. It's cute of the video maker, but the only person on a shoot telling models to jump is the photographer. ALL the mags do this for the obvious reason: to bring movement/volume to the clothes/hair. Obviously it gets boring time and time again. Funny how fashion sites lack writers/critics with such insight, or who have actually worked on fashion shoots like those highlighted in this video.

although, anna wintour is the one picking all the jumping shots at the end of the day, using the same model. Which makes it doubly tired.
