Hermès Makes a Paper Bag
May 13, 2008 @ 3:40pm
It's one thing to say, "Oh, I can totally make that myself!" and another to actually follow through.
We're constantly planning on making pretty jersey dresses and chunky necklaces for summer, though they rarely come to fruition, but we never planned on DIY'ing our own Kelly bag.
Thankfully, Hermes has made it very easy. You can go on their addictive World of Hermès site - seriously, we've spent the past hour watching videos of models in India, coloring in scarves and plotting on how to afford their pretty hair pins - and print out your very own iconic handbag.
Color it in, cut it out, glue it, and just put it on your desk because it's really very tiny.
It's like paper dolls - but better.
Fashionista Wait, Scratch That
May 13, 2008 @ 3:15pm
This morning WWD reported that ELLE's Joe Zee and Anne Slowey have started a New York City promo tour for the CW's "Fashionistas".
But there seems to be a little confusion on the Tyra front, or someone missed the memo.
Reuters now reports that the show is called Stylista, and the contestants will vie for the coveted ELLE position as well as two other prizes we haven't heard before: a year's paid lease on a Manhattan apartment and - perhaps the most covetable of all - a yearlong shopping allowance at H&M worth $100,000.
Hey, at least we don't have to share our name anymore...

Ali Michael, Today Show, Tomorrow
May 13, 2008 @ 2:21pm
Faran got an email from Ali Michael last night (yay!) saying she'd be on The Today Show tomorrow with Amy Astley from Teen Vogue to discuss models and body image.
The segment will air sometime between 8 and 9 am, so if you can't camp out for Ali's big appearance, set your DVRs to record the little fashion superstar in action.
Ali is also featured in an upcoming Teen Vogue article about her recent experiences getting cut from runway shows after gaining 5 lbs.
Faran wants her to intern for NYLON this summer, but she'll probably be too busy.
Meanwhile, did you know that Jourdan Dunn is in town getting fitted for a Vogue fashion shoot?
Keep your eyes out!
Audrina: Sort of an Actress
May 13, 2008 @ 1:27pm
Here's another fun Hills-related fact for today:
Audrina Patridge is set to be in an actual movie with actual actors and actual sets, unlike her real life on tv.
She's playing a small part in Into the Blue 2, the sequel to the beach-diving movie where Jessica Alba and Paul Walker starred in extended mini-bathing suit scenes.
Audrina's official character is that of "beach babe", and we can't wait to see if she can carry the weight of the role on her shoulders.
Next up: Scary Movie 19?
Dov Charney, Winner
May 13, 2008 @ 12:24pm
Dov Charney was just named Retailer of the Year for his work as the Creative Director and entrepreneur behind American Apparel.
The award's previously gone to Calvin Klein and Oscar de la Renta.
We're not convinced he holds court with the other winners, but he does have a knack for getting attention drawn to himself - even the awards committee says their "provocative advertising campaigns have set the company apart as a fascinating story in the fashion world."
Not to mention AA sells the most perfect jersey clothes that we don't need, but actually really do.
The ceremony, held in New York last week, explains his presence at the now infamous American Apparel on Houston and Orchard where he was spotted lurking around like the creeper everyone knows he is.
But we can't pass an American Apparel without buying yet another t-shirt, so he must be doing something right.

Lucky Editor Wins Playwrighting Award; Is Awesome
May 13, 2008 @ 11:02am
Take that, fashion doubters:
Lucky's longtime beauty editor, Liz Flahive (the blonde to the left), just demonstrated some major artistic genius by winning the Outer Critics Circle Award for her Off Broadway play, From Up Here.
The play is at the Manhattan Theater Club, and revolves around a high school boy named Kenny, whose dysfunctional high school, dysfunctional family, and expertly written dialogue make his entire life quite compelling for an audience of approximately 250 people a night.
The play snatched rave reviews from pretty much everyone, and Liz Flahive is only 28.
If you would like to drink to Liz's incredible success - aka drown your sorrows because you're not a Conde Nast editor and an acclaimed emerging playwright - you can join the Fashionista staff, because we're on our fifth martini right about now.
(Seriously, Liz, Awesome).
Teen Vogue Bans Teen Interns; Teen Cover Stars Still Okay
May 13, 2008 @ 10:29am
This just in from the ninth floor of 4 Times Square:
Teen Vogue has decided to abolish its long-held practice of hosting high school interns as part of its team.
The decision was apparently made after one too many Brearley girls decided to follow their editors to industry parties, uninvited and a little too drunk for their own good. Apparently, scoring high on your SATs doesn't mean you can define the word "crash."
Now, Teen Vogue's intern staff is 100% college girls, which seems way more appropriate and also even cooler - after all, when you're in high school, all you want is advice from 21-year-olds, so in an odd but true way, the magazine just got even more aspirational.
Meanwhile, the magazine's fizzy covers will indeed still feature teens - like Hayden Panetierre, 18, who's the latest blonde to pose for them.
Cheer up, 11th graders - your time will still come!
May 13, 2008 @ 10:03am
"So I'm like totally going to like NYC like yesterday but like most probably just soon for like a totally hot fashion shoot, so um I'm totally gonna freak out and like return and like tell you how psyched I am about like using the words trash and like cell and my apartment like next time we hang out and um blog and LIKE totally talk fashion!!!" - Erin O'Connor doing her best American accent on her Vogue UK blog.
Lauren Conrad Launches First Accessory Line for Avon
May 13, 2008 @ 9:28am
Not since Stella McCartney and LeSportsac teamed up has there been such a "what?!" in the accessories world:
Today, earlier rumors were confirmed that Lauren Conrad will pair with Avon, the makeup brand, to launch a new line of accessories for their youth-geared line, Mark.
These bags (and presumably, these makeup cases) are different from the collection Lauren already designed for Linea Pelle, and aren't connected to her own fashion line.
They'll debut to the press in mid-June, so until then, we'll have to imagine:
Will the bag named after "Lo" be big enough to edge the bag named "Audrina" off the shelf? Is the lone male messenger tote named "Stephen" or "Brody"?
And will People's Revolution be doing their press?
Stay tuned!
Fashion Mystery: Whose Seat Was Next to Linda's?
May 13, 2008 @ 9:00am
At last night's Dior Cruise show, Christina Aguilera sang along to her own song during the big finale while a lot of glitter fell from the models' nails and eyelashes.
Meanwhile, Allure countess Linda Wells had two empty seats next to her in the front row, leaving everyone to wonder whose they were supposed to be.
All sorts of rumors flew, from Madonna to Beyonce, and the clever boy who speculated the seats were for the ghost of Dior's past, but if you actually know, then you know the drill:
Email tips@fashionista.com and reveal all.
Tell early; tell often.
xoxo Fashionista.
