An Open Letter to Desperate Fashion Publicists

May 15, 2008 @ 4:38pm

heidi montag blue dress.jpgDear Desperate Housewives Fashion Publicists,

We've gotten a lot of emails lately telling us that Heidi Montag was spotted wearing whatever, that Kim Kardashian was spotted wearing whatever, that Fergie was spotted wearing whatever.

We understand you're just doing your job, but there's something you should know:

You're killing your clients.

If American girls knew that Heidi Montag was wearing something they wanted, they would immediately put it down and sprint - not walk - out of the store.

So here are some unofficial guidelines:

If the person wearing your client's clothes is...

* "Famous" for being a bitch on reality TV (see: Heidi Montag)
* "Famous" for sleeping with someone legitimately famous (see: Brandon Davis)
* "Famous" for being the sibling of someone legitimately famous (see: Ali Lohan)
* "Famous" because all they've ever wanted in their lives is to be famous, and therefore useless (see: Kim Kardashian, Stephanie Pratt, Kristen Cavalieri, anyone on My Super Sweet Sixteen, that Aubrey chick from Danity Kane, Jade from Top Model...)
* Really talented but constantly choosing terrible clothes (see: Fergie!)

Then we'll never buy the clothes they're wearing! Ever!

Please get the hint.

xoxo Fashionista. And every stylish girl in the world.

I think you underestimate the intelligence and ability of fashionable girls to separate the persona created by some "reality" character, and an amazing garment. Regardless of who wears a garment, if it's fierce then it will sell. I feel like this post was just petty and really didn't accomplish anything.

As a fashion publicist of the definitely NON-desperate type I couldn't agree with you more!! I actually laughed out loud when I read this. One addition you should make to this...
If you are a PR and asked "is that your (insert client's product) being worn by (insert any of the above mentioned)?"
DENY DENY DENY!! :)

I love you for this. As much as I think girls know the difference between good and bad fashion it still does no good for idiotic famous-for-nothing celebrities to get publicity.

Oh, and why does Heidi insist on consistently wearing something that looks like lingerie? She's starting to look more and more like a hooker. Oh well I guess its our fault for needing to watch the Hills to satisfy our guilty pleasures...

Hear, Hear! Fashionista!
Stylish women do not copy women who need stylists. They can dress themselves. Amazing, I know. :)

and 5:07, that's quite a long comment for something so 'petty' donchathink?

YES!!! You are 100% correct!! Heidi Montag? Ali Lohan?? Who would be caught dead in wearing what they wear. And the people who WOULD be caught wearing it... aren't the kind of people I'd like to associate with! Bad for business!

I'm torn between agreement and disagreement.

Whilst tacky "stars" wearing a particular item of clothing can completely ruin that item, I'd like to think that I have enough style of my own to see past how bad they make it look, and be able to make it look amazing on myself, if I was so inclined.

I think the issue is more when someone wears a item of clothing or style of clothing over and over to the point that it becomes associated with that person is when it truly becomes detrimental.

i agree 100% with fashionista...in fact i always thought that my wardrobe wouldn't be complete without a chanel bag, but i'm beginning to get very turned off by them =( just because you're swinging a fancy purse on your arm does not mean you have style! and i certainly do not want to look like one of those girls.

If I saw any of those girls wearing something I own, ewe... if Heidi or Kristen wore something I owned, I think I would burn it

LOL. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels like that or realizes that Aubry from Danity Kane is a mess.

I agree but let's not forget that MOST women aren't born with a fantastic sense of fashion. In fact, many resort to dressing like a cheap skank in order to get male attention. Beleive it or not, there is a huge market for this crap. Fear not fashionistas, without them, we could never look this good ;)

Thank you for writing this they make what's meant to be beautiful look like trash and its nice to finally hear someone say that just because they plead endlessly for attention doesnt mean they're really even worth 15 minutes of fame or attention, they just look desperate, which is no lead any fashionista would ever follow. Im suprised they get away with wearing most of the designers they do, it isnt positive advertising and they sure aren't role models.
