Conde Pays Sean Avery

Friday, May 16, 2008 / 8:59 AM

sean avery dressed.jpgSean Avery, hockey star to the Rangers, started his internship at Vogue this past Monday.
But according to WWD, it seems the man is already getting some special treatment.
Not only is he sitting in on meetings, helping with every department, and going to the couture shows next month, but apparently he’s earning minimum wage for his time, too.
That might not sound like much to most people, but keep in mind that almost every single other intern there not only doesn’t get paid at all, but usually ends up actually paying to be there (as I, dear reader, did three times for Conde internships). Conde usually requires school credit for interning, and if you’re an NYC college student, you already know that a four-credit internship usually rings in around $4,000.
Did I mention Sean Avery earned $2 million last year?
I hope he gets sent to Starbucks every hour.
(On a side note: did anyone else catch Sean’s picture in the June Vogue? He’s flanked by Chanel and Behati on page 78. A Men’s Vogue cover is definitely in the works…)

Conde’s paying summer interns now if you go through their “program”.

I should have known this was going to happen! Shame on me for thinking all interns should be treated equally and fairly. That man has no more experience in fashion than any other intern and yet. . . he gets to do all of this? I realize this is just a PR move on their part, but I wouldn’t think Vogue of all places would sink so low. . .as a former magazine intern, I’m pissed! Laia. . . you were right!

I know exactly how you feel Natalie. I did two internships, one with Conde, the other with a smaller publisher here in California. The one for Conde was in London, and let me tell you, they did not pay for my plane ticket or my hotel for the weeks I was there. Nor did they pay for taxis when I had to pick up editors’ dry cleaning, lunch, or take clothes back from photo shoots. At the internship here in Los Angeles, they didn’t pay for my parking in the building, so i had to take my chances parking on the street, which was metered, and run down every two hours to move it. About six parking tickets later, I was hout a couple hundred bucks. Oh, plus the gas. But of course, when you’re a desperate kid looking for jobs in the “fabulous” magazine world, you do it. It all seems a little ridiculous, all this about Sean Avery. He’s probably letting Hamish Bowles blow him.

that’s horrible. i can’t even imagine how many talented individuals the fashion world loses out on by being so elitist/class centric. these are exactly the type of opportunites that should be made available to young people breaking into the industry. :(

ugh this makes me sick! Not only because of the unequal treatment of interns but also because Sean Avery is such an egotistical asshole. He is the most hated player in the league!

PJH: ROTFL!
Other than the blatant PR angle why the hell is this guy ‘interning’ at any mag?
Is he really going to fetch Starbucks and lunch? C’mon!
This is exactly what drives me nuts about celebs. They get an ‘in’ for any job that takes the rest of us years and unpaid internships (and all that entails)to get.
Let me guess, he’s coming out with a ‘clothing line’ and thinks that this will buy him some cred, right?

Why is anyone surprised? Anna has a new jock crush. She could do a lot worse then a decent-looking hockey player.

Who the hell is this guy? I’ve never heard of him. Can someone explain the ‘credits’ thing to me. Does it mean the magazine pays the school or what?

PJH I’m totally agree with your coment of Hamish Bowles….this make me sick too…I’m triying to found my first intership and think that this men with just a few days will probably be in the couture shows is unacceptable.

quest 9:17 which “program” pleas tell us

Whoa, calm down, ladies.
First of all, as 9:17 pointed out, all Conde summer interns that go through their program are getting a stipend for the whole summer which equals around minimum wage.
Second, I sincerely doubt that he is taking the place of another intern, I think they just created this pseudo-intern position just for him. I would bet the same number of 20 year old girls will be fetching coffee and calling messengers this summer.
Lastly, I’m surprised at the lack of love for him. If only more pro athletes had taste like him! Check out this profile from October where he talks about loving his black patent leather YSL high-tops etc. ! http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/14/magazine/14wwln-domains-t.html

This whole situation is repulsive to me for the following 3 reasons:
1) All the aforementioned stuff about it not being fair, etc. (all valid by the way)
2) Every cell in his body reeks of douchebaginess.
3) He is a HOCKEY player. HOCKEY…seriously…HOCKEY. I’d be surprised if any Voguettes know that hockey is even played in this country.
Anyone care to guess his real motivation for interning at Vogue? Sorry Sean, but its kind of hard to impress girls that are 2 inches taller than you.

@memento mori
Sean Avery is a douchbag he deserves all the hate he can get.

PJH, i love you.

He can be my intern.
I’m offering $10 an hour for those.
