Hermès Makes a Paper Bag

May 13, 2008 @ 3:40pm

hermes.jpgIt's one thing to say, "Oh, I can totally make that myself!" and another to actually follow through.

We're constantly planning on making pretty jersey dresses and chunky necklaces for summer, though they rarely come to fruition, but we never planned on DIY'ing our own Kelly bag.

Thankfully, Hermes has made it very easy. You can go on their addictive World of Hermès site - seriously, we've spent the past hour watching videos of models in India, coloring in scarves and plotting on how to afford their pretty hair pins - and print out your very own iconic handbag.

Color it in, cut it out, glue it, and just put it on your desk because it's really very tiny.

It's like paper dolls - but better.

Wow. . . in a time when everyone in the world seems to be trying to hop on green/eco bandwagon, this sounds like a gigantic waste of time and a sheet of a paper. . . I mean, I realize it's just a sheet, but what purpose does this thing actually serve? (I suppose you could use it as an envelope). Now Hermes, when you want to blow up that pattern so people can make their own with cloth and actually use it (yeah. . . right, I know). . . then we'll talk.

Guest at 3:54 PM - Even if Hermes did blow ip the pattern, you would still have to print it before laying it out on your fabric. And I'm pretty sure that would use more than this one sheet of paper...

This is all sorts of epic. I printed out 6 blank copies in case inspiration strikes when this eventually gets taken down from the site. No class today; time to crank up the tunes and paint me some mini purses!

(making a larger version w/ different material seems do-able. Calling all sewing studs! When there's a will, there's a way!)

It wouldn't necessarily have to waste paper... You could use the back of another sheet of paper you'd already printed something on, etc.

etoilee-- it's no more a waste of paper than say, drawing or making an origami crane.

I think this is amazingly cute :]

If you print it on cardstock, that would make a super-adorable gift box for a piece of jewelry or a gift card. Or you could print it on gorgeous scrapbooking paper! Don't print out 6 blank ones; just save it as a pdf on your computer and you'll always have it!

I'm tempted to enlarge it on the photocopier at work and try making it out of different things, like felt first or something.

But for now, I attack teeny paper ones with Prismacolours.

Yeah guest 3:54, you would have to use the paper, but at least you'd have a nice little bag for your trouble. Guest 6:50 I'm happy you think it's cute, but I still think it's an absolute waste of time. A little paper handbag? Really??? To hold your paper clips? For a company who charges $6,000 a pop for handbags, when they launch a diy project, I expect something with a little more substance. . . but I suppose nothings better than some subtle advertisement which people have to make themselves. Well played Hermes. . . "I can't afford the handbag, but look I have this handy little paper clip holder!"

For crying out loud, it's just for fun! My thought was it would be a fun Barbi purse. Whenever I see things in miniature, I revert back to childhood and go, "That's a perfect Barbie item..."

Like the idea of using it as a gift bag fo jewelry, too.

Not sure why people have such beef with this idea -- it's smart PR on Hermes' part, and people get to be semi-crafty/creative and have fun, and end up with a cute little object that may entertain them for all of five minutes before they're over it, or they may make 100 of them, string them all over their bedroom, and love it for months or years.

I don't see what causes such negative feelings about it.
