How Much is that Backpack in the Window?

May 14, 2008 @ 12:10pm

PuppysBad news for trendmongers:

The stuffed-animal-as-backpack trend might actually be back for a while.

Natalie and Britt first spotted the phenomenon a few weeks ago on Mott Street, but at the time, we all chalked it up to German tourists thinking Cafe Gitane housed a secret basement rave.

Alas, that's not the case:

It seems a huge store on Union Square South - the one just across the street from Strawberry - is selling puppy backpacks (Backpuppies? Puppacks?) and also those plastic sunglasses that look like window shades.

We wouldn't recommend wearing them together.

Okay, we wouldn't recommend wearing them at all. Unless you're auditioning for a community theater production of Rent, that is...

I think my 5 year old daughter would love one of those! Do you think Toys R Us carries them?

Horrible if you are over the age of three.

I agree stuffed animal bags are heinous,,, but come on fashionista.I know exactly what store you're talking about (it used to be square one, sigh...) that store is a ghetto-fab bootie jeans store, and they've had those animal bags in the window religiously for YEARS, is this really news or blog worthy? maybe if they show up in the Bergdorfs windows...

I would have loved one of those when I was 13.

I wouldn't carry one now that I'm 26, because I would look like a lolcat: "OMG! invisibul 5-year-old daughter"

I saw a 40 year old woman carrying one Saturday at the Met. For a moment, I thought it was a real dog.

This is the type of "trend" that only elementary school students and out-of-touch suburban mothers will follow. And it's kind of old news: around Christmas time, I was seeing massive displays of disturbingly realistic dog bags at JC Penney and the like.

That "huge store on Union Square South" sold puppy backpacks way before Stella McCartney (not that I advocate wearing one). They also always have an enormous variety of the big Puma gym bags.

Really, it's OK take a peek in these stores. Snobbery doesn't equal style, and it's boring, too.

Those bags have been in that window for well over a year now. I've been waiting for the store to remove them from the window because aside from being ridiculous, they look really cheaply made.

So the Prada teddy bear bag is a no go for my 9-year-old niece?

shutter shades are the devil. kanye doesn't even wear them on the tour [which is, by the way, completely amazing].
