Streetwalker: La Belle et le Balenciaga

May 01, 2008 @ 12:16pm

streetwalkers.JPGThe Albright girls from the Albright NYC Fashion Library.

Got Them: At the Free Arts auction at Milk Studios last night.

Stalked Them: Well, actually, we were stalking Clive Owen but he was nowhere to be found.

Shot Them: Because they stood out among the Chuck Closes and Marilyn Minters hanging on the walls. Oh, also because we've never seen real girls rock Balenciaga, and it was kind of amazing.

They Say: "Real girls should wear Balenciaga! It's actually depressing how much they dumb down the collection from the runway to the racks. I mean, the poufy sleeves have like a quarter the volume they're supposed to! Can you believe their shape was actually held by styrofoam?!"

We Say: Only Nicolas could make styrofoam work.

I think blah, even if it is Balenciaga.

ummm the reason most 'real girls' don't wear balenciaga is the price tag, not because we're too nervous about it. and sorry but if i had the funds to sport at least two runway pieces on a random wednesday night, i would hope i stood out more than these girls.

guest 2:30- amen.
It's a shame the Balenciaga dresses are so dumbed-down from the runway, yes, but I get the feeling that these two broads would have been way too nervous to wear them in their spectacular, architectural runway glory. Question: if you love the dress or top so much, why cover it up with such a boring, bland, collegiate black jacket? Impeccable tailoring aside, I could find a good copy of either at my local F21 or Macy's, or on the back of any girl at my college three months ago when it was cold out.

Guest 3:12: yes, she is a real girl, but she still could've bought the next larger size.

please, buy me a balenciaga dress. i will have no problem rocking it. i'd have bought one myself, but would rather pay several months of rent.

Hmm. Yawn. Could be without the black. And the snob factor.

Cute girls, just not in balenciaga. I dot think the designer had their body types in mind when he created the assembles..I do like the long jacket on the girl with the ponytail. Wish she wore soethign other than blue jeans under it though.

Neither of these bitches should be rocking Balenciaga. They're bland and so predictable. I'm all for normal people wearing it, but please do not wear it with a coat that J. Crew knocked off. Live a little.

To guest @ 3:12: Models are real girls, as well. Women come in different shapes and sizes, and one variety is never more "real" than the other.

And these particular girls are not doing Balenciaga justice. Their snobbish attitude certainly isn't helping matters.

omg the girl on the left looks horrible--that dress is the wrong color for her, that jacket is NOT WORKING AT ALL, and the shoes are fug with the rest of the ensemble. Working it? Please. Proof money does not buy you style.

In an editorial in NYT Style magazine, there was a Balenciaga look similar to these and the skirt was 12,000.00 and the jacket was 36,000.00... yeah, as in 3 zeros.

Meee-yow, fellow commentors.
Can we not just appreciate the fact that these 2 women can afford designer pieces and enjoy wearing them without having to resort to catty and underhanded comments about their weight or fashion sense?
I, like everyone else on this board, am obviously jealous, but don't feel the need to express it in petty and hateful ways.

Funny she should comment on "dumbing down". American's are known for dumbing down a beautiful piece my wearing it with jeans. Typical.

oy vey, this is not working for me at all. just because they can afford it doesn't mean they should wear it. ill give them the benefit of the doubt though, maybe its a bad picture. from that angle i wouldn't have even know for sure that the dresses were balenciaga because the jackets are taking over. but still, i was so excited to see them off the runway for the first time and this is such a let down.

8:27, why should we "appreciate" them for being obscenely rich? i think respect for having the courage to wear the dresses even when they knew they were going to get scruntized/ripped apart is more like it

Yawn yawn
Another example of people blindingly buying trends..

Don't get me wrong, I loved the collection but I really don't think these ladies suit the pieces.. Maybe do away with the ankle boots, and definitely the blazers.. Sigh, I wish I could afford ONE piece of runway piece..........

OK, now that ive read most of the negative comments, I'll stick up for the girl in the floral dress b/c i didn't like her look at first. So what she's not a size 2 (most likely an 6-8) she is killing the look and looks ferosh! I love the shoes and the dress on her, just wish the jacket were a little shorter. Wish she weren't afraid to show her figure. But I'm sure if she did, the comments would be much worse.

You looks great! keep it up!

Ummm... I think Balenciaga is not meant to be worn in 'real life'. It is supposed to be outrageous, architectural, and imposing. That has always been the Balenciaga style - not for the faint of heart. I think I appreciate the effort of these girls for trying; I especially like the long coat with jeans, but I think MK is sooo much fiercer and actually pulls it off. I think it takes a certain ammount of spunk and scariness to make Nicholas Ghesquiere's designs come to life and you have to mix it in with lower volume peices. That being said, I own some, love it, and often get comments.
