Teen Vogue Bans Teen Interns; Teen Cover Stars Still Okay

Hayden on Teen Vogue Cover This just in from the ninth floor of 4 Times Square:

Teen Vogue has decided to abolish its long-held practice of hosting high school interns as part of its team.

The decision was apparently made after one too many Brearley girls decided to follow their editors to industry parties, uninvited and a little too drunk for their own good. Apparently, scoring high on your SATs doesn’t mean you can define the word “crash.”

Now, Teen Vogue’s intern staff is 100% college girls, which seems way more appropriate and also even cooler - after all, when you’re in high school, all you want is advice from 21-year-olds, so in an odd but true way, the magazine just got even more aspirational.

Meanwhile, the magazine’s fizzy covers will indeed still feature teens - like Hayden Panetierre, 18, who’s the latest blonde to pose for them.

Cheer up, 11th graders - your time will still come!

So how exactly DO you score an internship at Teen Vogue? Connections? Do you have to be pretty, white and pampered? Any suggestions?

hey guest, as a former teen vogue intern myself, i can tell you that they absolutely have had high school interns at teen vogue, in fact i worked with them. they just weren't registered with HR, and yes, those were the girls that usually had connections.

as far as getting an internship there without connections, i'd suggest sending a resume and SHORT cover letter to the head of whichever department you want to intern for, as well as the assistant in that department (assistants usually do the weeding out). then, keep e-mailing every 2-3 days until you finally get a response from them.

natalie - as someone currently at TV i can tell you that my department no longer hires high school interns. EVER. we haven't for a long time. these days, you can't get an access pass into the building without being registered with HR.

also, emailing every 2-3 days? bad, bad idea. you would annoy us so much that we'd NOT hire you just for that. if you have the right experience and fit for us, we'll call you. it's as simple as that.

finally, you can ask any current intern and they'll tell you how diverse our interns are in terms of ethnicity and nationality!

I interned at Teen Vogue as a high school senior in 2006.

So, that puts that to rest.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know of any publications that actually DO take high schoolers as interns (besides cosmogirl)? As a high school sophomore with a proficiency in writing and a strong interest in fashion, I would be very interested in pursuing an internship sometime next year.

fashionista, that was just one brearley girl, tess brokaw, who also had an incriminating blog and crashed the met gala. one girl, not "one too many."

also, why is the fact that it more aspirational "cooler?"

I would suggest that one girl who got drunk and crashed the met party, is probably "one too many".

Teen Vogue interns are much more diverse than the Vogue interns upstairs!

Can't you just lie about your age? Or do you need letters from the school and stuff? (Erm...doh, I think I just answered my own question...)
