Fashion Is Fun

Notes on the Met Ball

kate at the met ball.jpgWhat I learned at the Met Ball last night:

- Zac Posen is my fashion superhero. Please see his combined superman costume with Kate Mara.

- Models only hang out with models. I felt like a kid in a candy store watching Coco, Anja, Hilary, Chanel, Stam, Lily D., and Doutzen cluster for 15 minutes…although literally no one else cared. Apparently George Clooney’s a bigger deal.

- Michelle Trachtenberg is one of the models. She jumped into Stam’s arms and kiss/kissed everyone else, (while also, interestingly enough, avoiding every single Gossip Girl cast member on the red carpet).

- Philip Lim and Chanel Iman are the perfect couple - and probably the only two people who look amazing in that faded mustard color.

- The Voguettes did not have to wear shades of white. I spotted mint green, gold, purple, and navy - which was on Meredith Melling-Burke who also wore Natalie’s beloved YSL star necklace.

- When I asked Christopher Bailey which superhero he was channelling, he said, “Christopher Bailey!” and giggled.

- Donatella Versace wears a wig.

- Penn Badgley wears red and blue cufflinks - his personal homage to Spiderman - while waiting for Blake Lively to pose for pictures. Apparently, the waiting has become a nightly routine.

- When Pacey stands next to Chuck, Nate and Dan, I long for the teen dramas of my adolescence - even if the clothes are better now.

Your photos are great! The ones of Anna in that dress and with those glowing red eyes made me think of Tim Curry in the movie 'Legend'.
That said, I thought that there were some great outfits that reflected the theme of the night(Zac Posen). The rest seemed like more of the same,'my stylist put this together' looks. I was hoping to see more creativity. But maybe you had to be there.

I know, Holly. Where were all the super heroes!? I saw Caroline Trentini who looked 'fierce' in her super hero getup. Christina Ricci looked like Wonder Woman. Naomi Watts looked pretty cool in her super heroine get up and Anna Wintour looked like a futuristic hero. And of course you can't forget Zac and Kate Mara as Superman.

Am I missing the other heroes?

On a side note, how hot did coco and anja look in Pucci!?

Who of the models was the prettiest in person?

Anna Wintour and Zac and Kate Mara handily won the whole day. Christina Ricci's was really interesting, with the sheer gown over the red Wonder Woman bustier--nice work with the super hero/secret identity layering. (Honorable mention to Amber Valletta)

Otherwise, kinda disappointing. Did everyone just phone it in? What a sad way to respond to "Super Heroes"

I mean, Dita von Teese looked lovely, but she totally let me down by not channelling a Golden Age 4-color super heroine.

No one was as much a superhero as they could have been. I loved Anna's dress. She looked like an extra from The Little Mermaid musical. :) Allegra Versace looks exactly like Audrina from The Hills to me. Kate looked great, as usual, but I'm not sure if her look, or anyone's for that matter, was daring enough.

Anna and Zac/Kate were the only ones who really tried with the theme. As much as I love the Proenza Schouler Airplane dresses, I can't believe Stam thought it "looked like it had a cape"???
Did ya'll get any pics of Lim and Iman? I only saw it on the ny mag video clip........

Zac Posen beat out all the girls. Hands down.
Close second would be Christina Ricci and Anna Wintour.
Zoe Kravitz and Kate Moss (of course) looked amazing too.

UGH where is the creativity? This is like that scene in mean girls where Lindsay Lohan says a costume party means everyone can dress as sluts....this was true here, except replace sluts with NUTS. What was Amy Astley thinking in that heinous Gucci? (see pic on style.com). She also looks queasy standing next to Sally Singer.

Other hot messes included: ironically, a lot of Voguettes....Sarah Brown wearing an upside down snow cone. Joy Bryant in a full length Pucci print with TURTLENECK.

Loved Jennifer Connelly in next seasons' Balenciaga...the collection, while not as exaggerated as s/s 08, is cut sexily and resembles the daytime ensembles of Selina Kyle, Catwoman's alter-ego....but somehow I doubt she knows this.

Anna looks like a snail! I love it. haha... Giselle's dress was awful, although she looked beautiful.

Bee Schaffer looked fabulous - I love Olivier! And I liked Coco's dress - sooo daring. :-) Christina Ricci looked AMAZING! I love love love the dress. :-)

What happened to Sarah Jessica Parker?

I feel like this year lacked some star power and creativity from the attendees. A lot of the dresses were either very safe choices or were just very colorful.
I was looking forward to seeing people internet different superheroes or the theme in creative and exciting ways and all we got was...not much really. I feel like this was the perfect theme to go to some fun extremes like Charlize in Dior from Dangerous Liasons or SJP in McQueen for Anglomania.

This Met Ball was really uninspiring in the celebrity photo category. I think it's because the Armani/Superheroes thing DOESN'T MIX. So lots more friends wore Armani which diluted the whole event, paparazzi-wise and color-wise. His clothes made every woman look 10+ years older - Julia Roberts DID look like Mother-of-the-Bride. It would be much more interesting to see some of the other attendees who had the freedom to wear what they wanted under the paparazzi radar. Amanda Peet & Maggie Gyllenhaal's hemlines were a mess. Jennifer Connelly wore a DAY LOOK, and should have worn REAL VINTAGE ICE instead of direct-from-runway version. Spotted: Cecilia Dean was FIERCE in Rodarte & Was Anne Bass wearing Gaultier Couture leaving the Ball?

Nicolas Ghesquiere should have made Jennifer Connelly's skirt floor-length & she would have gone from Cocktail to Gala. She's still gorgeous.
