Explain

Who Are You Wearing? Target?

sjp.jpgLast Year, Kate Moss wore a dress from Topshop (yes, we know it was her own design, but still) to the Met Ball - the party of the year and the most appropriate time to wear couture.

A few weeks ago, Sarah Jessica Parker, that ultimate paragon of the cheap dress / expensive shoes look showed up to Matthew Broderick’s premiere in a dress from Bitten. It’s one thing to go on Oprah wearing a $40.00 outfit and $700.00 shoes to promote your new line - but the red carpet’s a bit of a different scene. And this is the woman who not too long ago wouldn’t step out on a red carpet in anything less than couture. Now she’s in a $10 cotton sun dress?

Is this what she meant when she said she and her friends compete over who spends the least on their outfit?

And then last Thursday, Vanessa Von Bismarck, PR Princess and real life Countess wore Banana Republic to a Lulu DK event at Antony Todd. Her wedding was documented inVogue and the dress was custom made Derek Lam. But now that she’s pregnant she decides mid-priced career wear is more her speed? As far as we know, she is not designing a line for BR.

We love Banana and Topshop, but given the choice, Britt would wear Vivienne Westwood, Natalie would go straight to Matthew Williamson, and I would be on the phone with Thom Browne. Maybe if we wore Chanel Couture on a weekly basis, we too would be jonesing for a cheap and chic red carpet look.

How about you?

Look. There are much bigger problems in the world. I say wear what makes you happy, and don't sweat the bitter fashionistas.

The thing is, at least Kate Moss' dress was semi-interesting. SJP's is so... blah to me. It looks like it could have come from Wal-Mart in the '90s or something.

Also something I find slightly interesting is she wore it to an event for her hubby, not her own. I wonder if he felt at all resentful, like, "Oh, she can wear the cheap stuff to MY events..." but obviously that's all just silly conjecture.

Are you serious about this??
WTF! You need to focus on more important
news within the fashion world.
I mean, I love SJP and I think she looks great in the dress, I don't understand why you think that simply because someone has always flown high they can't ever be seen flying low again.
PLEASE!

I don't like SJP's dress. But I do think its great that she's standing behind it. Her "fashion is for everyone" line would fall flat if she didn't show up to events wearing her own dresses.

All I said was that it was kind of interesting that these women, who are known for wearing expensive clothing, are now wearing inexpensive dresses at big events.

I think that those women that are in the position of being in the public eye can and should support designers by wearing their dresses on the red carpet.

I am not saying it must be couture.

I am saying that the allure of the red carpet is its fantasy element, and by wearing Topshop or Bitten or Banana, it kind of diminishes the dream.

The red carpet is not in an ever lasting contract with high end designers. If a celeb who's style is THEIRS to express as they wish, chooses a more accessible pieces BRAVO .. if they show a way to make the outfit look 10 x better and a way to rock it differently BRAVO. Meh the pretensiousness on this site has been turned up several notches recently. I take it you're all trust fund babies living in some form of a deluded world??

You guys are crazy! I think she looks awesome in that dress, and who cares if it costs $10 bucks? Fashion is not that serious, you wear what you want and what makes you feel good.

you guys are right that often more expensive designers provide a higher-quality experience, as far as fabric/cutting/etc goes, but i think often you guys get too caught up in mere prices of things.

If she is going to profit off of $10 sweat shop dresses, the very least she could do is wear her "designs."

I say do whatever makes you happy. If you want to make a statement and show up in Gap, then go for it and wear it proud. If you want to utilize the awesome and willing designers at your disposal, then that works too.

I take off my cap to miss SJP, she did say that Bitten is for everyone. She also kept saying that she even wears pieces from the line, so it's kind of nice to know that she isn't lying and that she's not just wearing them to the park with her son. Bravo for giving the finger to the fashion establishment.

P.S. Lets not forget Sharon Stone and her gap turtleneck on the redcarpet...how fab was that?

In my opinion, there's absolutely nothing wrong with wearing a $10 dress, especially because it looks way more expensive than that! I mean, honestly, you guys go thrifting, don't you? And you'd wear a $5 vintage dress to a cocktail party because nobody else would be wearing it and it's clothing with history, right? If not, I'm very disappointed in you -- how can you call yourselves 'fashionistas' without thrifting, putting expensive items with cheap items, or even putting cheap items with cheap items?

Money has never equaled style.

And supporting designers? Someone designs less expensive clothing, too, so they are supporting designers.

The eternal internal battle of the fashionista: we argue that fashion can have substance, that it's really about personal expression, artistic style, fun and creativity... But the labels still do matter, the exclusionary aspect always creeps in, and if anyone can wear something it's just not as cool. As much as we want to think we're into fashion as a creative outlet, we're all in thrall to the advertising campaigns and the status symbols and wanting to feel superior, that everyone else wants what we have. If cheap can't equal fashion, that means that, to some extent, fashion = expensive. Taste and style become less relevant, to some, than exclusivity.

Why should it matter whether the dress costs $10 or $10,000? SJP looks great.

Matthew, on the other hand...looks horrible in that suit.

I think style is from the heart, not the wallet. Kate Moss became an icon because she could mix beat up thrift store finds with couture and make it her own. Fashion has changed in the last 20 years - it is no longer about elitism or nuance; it is mainstream commercialized and utilitatrian. Marc Jacobs is 'technically' a designer but he sells things that are just as low-quality in his much higher priced Marc line and it is referred to as a bridge collection. Fashion in America is not about art, but commerce and good for SJP for at least practicing what she preaches.

i can't believe you wrote an entire article about this. this isn't blogging about what you admire in fashion, this is just cutting someone down just because she didn't spent ridiculous (and stupid) amounts of money on couture. ridiculous.

The point of wearing clothes is (or should be in my opinion) to make yourself feel good, whether it's in high priced clothing or inexpensive pieces.

I like her dress. And I'm going to suggest the following: if the dress had been designed by any famous designer and cost more than $800, all of you "couture" lovers would be saying how great it is and how much you wish you could afford it. Do you like it less because you know how much it costs??

I love this website but every so often a pernicious fashion snobbery creeps into the posts.
In my opinion, it takes way more fashion know-how and style to pull together a chic outfit from thrift stores, mall chains, and high street than to just put something on that a designer threw at you.
