Would You Wear Boat Shoes?

May 09, 2008 @ 2:10pm

Picture 5.pngWe didn't even know what boat shoes were until we picked up and moved to the east coast for college a whopping seven years ago.

And even then, they became associated with a very specific kind of boy whose outfit was generally topped off with a pastel shade. But two weeks ago, we saw a pair walking through the West Village, and they were topped off with a drop dead gorgeous Lazaro Hernandez and not a pastel in sight.

Then someone told us that "all" the hipsters are wearing them, (we're not sure we believe this since we live in Hipsterville, Brooklyn and we've yet to see them). Then an ex-boyfriend texted to ask where he could get a pair. Then we saw three, yes three!, adorable girls out last night wearing boat shoes with their flirty summer dresses. And then the final proof that they are indeed a trend? There's an entire row of red and blue ones at the Forever 21 on Broadway.

We'll forever associate them with those New England boys around campus, but we think they actually work with girly dresses - they tone them down a bit and make them perfect for lazy afternoons.

Are you searching high and low for Sperry's or are you sticking with your trusty gladiator sandals this summer?

I recently graduated from school in Gainesville FL and whenever I go back there to visit, I see more than a few hipsters wearing these shoes (just the boys though). I also think the boatshoe trend is being helped by Vampire Weekend and their Ivy League, preppy-but-indie boy image.

this is like the oldest news ever.
people have been wearing these all over brooklyn and lower manhattan for like, three years. not only boring preppy kids with pastels, like referenced, but people in skintight jeans and ripped t-shirts and stuff.

not only can fashionista not cover anything worthwhile beyond guessing which models are which and what's happening on gossip girl, when they actually do cover fashion - it's outdated.

annnndd....this comment will probably be censored, like all the ones that are critical of this website.

For hipster boys, they've been back for about two years now. I bought my Sperry's in January '06 (brown) and I usually wear them with cuffed skinny jeans (or short denim cutoffs). For that extra kick, curl the leather laces. YEAH.

Fashionista tends to cover high fashion and does a great job at it. Their street trends post are sometimes a little behind, but that's because the fashion world in NY can be a little behind on street trends that didn't originate there. In my opinion. So celebrate what the blog is good at. Negativity is a unwarranted.

Guest @ 2:13, I just graduated from there too! Although boat shoes will always remind me of fraternity boys in pastel polos, I am excited to finally see them outside of the preppy context. I love them! I found the perfect pair of Sperry's--they are metallic bronze and girlie--that I practically live in on summer afternoons...and pastel is naught to be seen.

Sorry I have to agree wholeheartedly with Guest @ 2:38 PM...You would have to be living under a rock to not notice how much of a continuous present boat shoes have been among 'cool' kids for at least the past several years...you guys need to be more bottom up than top down.

This is the first time I have EVER commented on Fashionista--back to lurking!

The classic dark brown topsiders were one of the best [small-ish] investments I've made in years. They add a nice collegiate sportiness to any outfit which is, for a girl without an athletic bone in her body, very refreshing.

i love them! the school i go to lets us wear them and i think they look adorable with my uniform skirt. i like the light tan suede ones with the plaid on the inside.

There are tons of uses for/reasons to wear boat shoes. When I was growing up, I wore them on boats (obvs), then when I went to college, I realized they were great for not slipping on beer-covered basement floors. Now a few years out of college, I wear them because they are shoes that are cute! That said, I don't see them on tons of fashion-y people the way I see glads or ankle boots, but considering the increasing popularity of BOY, brooks bros. black fleece, and that brand just profiled in vogue (with the husband and wife design team and their baby all dressed in tailored boy's clothes), I am sure they will be everywhere soon. I wish I was wearing them today, maybe I wouldn't have fallen on my butt in the middle of wholefoods bowery!

They wear them with jeans and tees. They wear them with shorts and tanks. Yes, I wear them with dresses to be different from everyone else. I've had mine for over a year now, but my "old" uncles have lived in boat shoes as long as I can remember. They actually "boat" in them, but not a sail boat or a yacht or anything fun liike that. We boat in the bay. They do carpentry in them and teach in them and hang out on Sundays with the family in them.
