Quote of the Day

“Secrecy has clouded Sex and the City since it was first announced. When would the film appear? Who would find a husband? Would one of the main characters die? If so, would she commit suicide by self-pity (a constant threat), or would a crocodile escape from the Bronx Zoo and wreak a flesh-ripping revenge for all those handbags? As the release date neared, the paranoia thickened; at the screening I attended, we were asked not only to surrender our cell phones but to march through a beeping security gate, as if boarding a plane to Tel Aviv. There was even a full-body pat-down, by far the biggest turn-on of the night. Not a drop of the forthcoming plot had been leaked in advance, but I took a wild guess. “Apparently,” I said to the woman behind me in line, “some of the girls have problems with their men, break up for a while, and then get back together again.” “Oh, my God!” she cried. “How do you know?” - Anthony Lane’s story, from The New Yorker.

Kim Cattrall Is Not a Sample Size

kim-cattrall-picture-1.jpg Our favorite piece of weekend information came from a red carpet stylist who said that Kim Cattrall wears a Size Eight.

For those of you saying “So what?”, here’s what:

Many actresses and publicists of actresses claim their clients have to be so thin in order to stay in the fashion game, since designers only lend out samples, which tend to be much smaller.

But Kim has her pick of fashion labels - Vivienne Westwood and Michael Kors, most recently - and she doesn’t look like she needs a quick trip to rehab. Actually, she looks pretty hot.

Maybe this is the start of other working Hollywood beauties worrying less about skinny and more about healthy?

Would You Rather Dye?

Picture 1.pngThere’s an ongoing discussion in our office about whether or not it’s ok to dye your hair at home.

I’ve experimented with it more than once, mostly blonde highlights in an attempt to recreate the perfect California beach hair I possessed naturally until moving to the east coast.

Luckily, it’s never turned orange or fallen out or cost me more than $10, and it’s a pretty good alternative to getting a tattoo which is what I usually want to do when I’m bored.

However, it’s never looked like Gwyneth’s either. I’m aware there’s a reason colorists have their jobs - it’s a science and an art rolled into one and they’re the ones trained to make your hair look pretty and more importantly, natural. Each time I’ve let a friend brush cheap chemicals onto my hair I’ve taken comfort in the fact that someone out there can fix it if I actually end up looking cheap.

But the rest of the office (all two of them today), balks at the the idea of color from a box, saying you’re most likely to come out looking brassy or brittle, and are better off just not dying it at all.

I’m sticking to lemon juice this summer, but are you intrigued by the Garnier boxes? Or do you save your pennies for salon only treatments?

Models

Agyness = Juuryoo

Apparently, Agyness was on television recently.

And apparently, she was forced into one of those sumo wrestler suits we’ve only ever seen on The Office, and battled Nick Grimshaw, who has in own show on BBC.

No idea who he is or why this happens, but please do check out the clip to watch Agyness writhe and laugh in ways that are totally unrelated to selling the Fall collections.

For those of you too busy to click, take heart in knowing that Agyness won the match. Previous wrestlers (that we like) for Nick Grimshaw include Alexa Chung (tie) and Sadie Frost (she lost).

Breaking: Anne Slowey Hires Stylista?!

From: ISee@All.com

Here’s something for your girls:

Rumor has it that Anne Slowey may actually be hiring her Stylista reality show contestant….(in the real, not the faux, ELLE office!).

But the show finishes filming soon (like now), so wouldn’t the new person answering her phones spoil the show a bit?

Wouldn’t everyone in the industry who calls / emails Anne end up knowing who wins?

Make Clothes for Barbie

blonde barbie.jpgSomething a lot of people don’t realize is that designers really don’t make that much money, especially when they’re starting out, and it pretty much stays that way except for the Donnas and Marcs of Seventh Ave.

And because we know there must be hordes of recent Parsons and FIT grads looking for jobs this month (or maybe you’re still looking for a job from last year, because seriously, it happens), consider this fact:

According to CNN, clothing designers for Barbie and Bratz make around $62,000 per year, which is probably more than the Proenza Boys made in their entire career up until their Target deal.

So if you think Miuccia’s purposefully ignoring your e-mails, you could always come up with the next silhouette shift for Barbie Princess.

“A lady will always feel dressed a la mode / In frillies she finds in the Portobello Road”

portobello road.jpgThe best part about living in London, aside from the boys and the beer, is the abundance of outdoor shopping opportunities.

So, imagine our delight at today’s news that Portobello Road will now have an online counterpart.

The winding Notting Hill road is one of the best markets because vintage stalls sit squished between up and coming designers and in London that just might mean the next McQueen.

But if your London tastes gear more toward Spitalfields or Camden, don’t worry. Lisette, Victoria and Georgina Cooper, the sisters behind the genius idea, plan on adding other markets as soon as the first is up and running.

And in case, like us, half the thrill of market shopping is in the bargaining, the girls have taken that into account and there’s an entire section for haggling.

Cheers!

Hi.

I just thought I’d let you guys know I saw Hedi Slimane with two of his mini-clones on Bleecker Street yesterday.

He was trudging in the opposite direction of MBMJ and heading towards Broadway.

Great Weekend.

Stella + Kirsten = Fall 08 Marc

stella tennant and kirsten owen at ungaro ss 2000.jpgWWD uncovered which model(s) will be the follow-up to Posh Spice for Marc’s Fall 2008 ads, and we don’t think anyone could have guessed this one -

Marc’s going the way of a lot of major campaigns for this Fall, signing two of the biggest models from the 90’s - Stella Tennant and Kirsten Owen.

Stella, who once announced her retirement from modeling in 1998, has appeared in campaigns for Louis Vuitton, Givenchy and Burberry.

You might remember Kirsten from campaigns for Helmut Lang, Alberta Ferretti, Chanel, Fendi, Louis Vuitton - and Marc. Most recently, she was the face of Acne Jeans this past Spring.

Fun facts: Both were both born in 1970 (making them four years older than Posh), and both are moms. In fact, Stella once shot a Burberry campaign while five months pregnant - now that’s a supermodel.

We’re guessing Marc’s going for a haunting mood to balance out the quirkiness of those fuzzy halo headbands. Stay tuned for images…
