I See London, I See France...

kate moss see through dress.jpgIt's no secret that we heart Kate Moss. Usually she can do no wrong, but when she recently stepped out wearing a dress that literally showed off all her assets, we were surprisingly put off. And it's not just Kate - lately we've noticed quite a few chicks on the street baring all in lingerie.

We understand lingerie inspired looks. We love a pretty slip dress or camisole for night. But that's not what's going on. The look we've been seeing is to actually wear what could pass for pajamas - in public. Even Shopbop's encouraging us to go through the day in hot pants and a tank top!

We understand they're comfy. But so are sweatpants, baggy t-shirts and yoga pants, and we aren't wearing those to work anytime soon. Plus the whole thing is a little bit of a fashion TMI. We're not sure we want the whole block knowing what we look like in our underwear.

We're not saying the look doesn't have potential to be cute - See Jil Sander and Marc Spring '08 for inventive and sophisticated applications of sheer. But for the regular girl, with a regular life off the runway, is it really acceptable?

How can there be at once a stigma against leaving the house in a sweat suit, but not against stepping outside in a see-through slip? Is it that outrageously comfortable clothes are acceptable if they maintain a degree of sexiness? Or is this the Juicy Couture sweat suit of 2008?

I see Kate as kind of the runway of street looks. You take what she does and reinterpret it. So I respect her for trying something really out there because why the hell not when your boobs look like that. On the other hand, she does look ridiculous and I hope I don't see more of this.

I actually wrote about this on my blog. Yes there is a fine line, but sometimes a nice black bra under a sheer white shirt can look chic. See my blog for ideas.

This is awful. Her dress is so sheer, she's basically naked. This isn't a case of flashbulbs making something look more sheer than it is, the fabric is transparent! It is not acceptable to go out in public dressed that way, especially when you have your young daughter with you. It's creepy and a little desperate. I usually like Kate but this really turns me off.

haha i don't think it's "new" to leave the house without a bra on under a see-through shirt.

gweneth and britney and pam anderson and jessica alba and uma, and honestly i could go on -- they've all done this "look." the fact that she's kate moss doesn't make it 'fashion.'

and uh there is a TOTAL stigma about doing this. you will alternately be ogled and cursed if you go out like this.

I have to disagree with Katie. I suspect the dress did not look so sheer in person. It's obviously night time, so the photographer must have used a flash.

I have a picture of myself wearing a black bra under a red tank, but in normal light, you could not tell the bra was black. The flash of the camera reveals all!

*But* Kate has been in the industry long enough to know what will happen when the flashbulbs start popping. This seems intentional.

Looks like you guys have a hater:
http://poliopoliopolio.blogspot.com/2008/06/ok-because-im-total-masochist-and-love.html

I've seen this guy around before, fyi, lingering outside of sample sales. He's a sharp observer, Ill give him that, but at the end of the day he's still a queen desperately overcompensating for a (Im guessing here) poor-ish 2nd-generation upbringing by dressing it all up in sample sale trendoid gar-bage that he doesn't have the balls to wear outside of his blog photos for fear of being called out for 'caring too much.' Which he obviously does. Oh, if only that photoshopped bow over his face was genetically permanent.

Sorry for the rant. I do a lot of "hate-reading" too I guess.

LOL @ "hate read" why even waste your time hating just don't read it. I don't always agree with Fashionista's views and I give my opinion and move on, but for me to dedicate an entire blog post about my hate for another blog well....that just means he wishes he was you guys!

One more thing...one reason the site probably "edited" your post is because you placed a link in it....and Fashonista has a love/hate relations ship with links in comments.

My cynical side says this was a very calculated decision on Kate's part. Of course, she knew she would be photographed and she needs a bit more notoriety since she's been dropped or demoted from several big ad campaigns. Let's face it, the photo of her allegedly doing coke was the best thing that ever happened to her career. Wearing a see-through dress is not on the same level, but the shots are getting circulated and talked about. www.modemonitor.com

Guest @ 3:51:

What exactly do you mean by "second generation"? I sincerely hope you don't mean to comment on the blogger's ethnicity or background. Criticize his point of view and his opinion, but it's a bit low (and not at all classy) to deride his sexuality (calling him a "queen"), his socioeconomic status ("poor-ish"?!), and his race (like it's a bad thing to be 2nd generation anything).

And frankly, I'm a little disappointed that the editors of this site are laughing right along with you. Ignorance and cavalier elitism are NEVER funny.

i think when its something like a black bra under a sheer-ish white shirt it can look nice (i think someone pointed this out here already) but i dont think id ever go so far as to skip the bra entirely and flash my nipples to the world like kate moss is doing in the photo. plus, i dont think id want to have to deal with all the people staring at my chest...waaaay too uncomfortable for me

I hope the moderators delete both the comments @3:51 and Natalie's unfortunate reply (and I really do give the benefit of the doubt that she was saying "HA" to the blog, and not the rest of the comments). It manages to insult a large portion of people who read this site with racism, elitism, and homophobia.

I read somewhere else that this picture was taken when she was in Turkey. That just makes it wrong. When you visit a country in which 95% of the population is Muslim (even if they are secular Muslims), you don't walk around with your nipples in plain view. It's tasteless and shows a complete lack of cultural sensitivity.

I definitely don't know quite how i feel about being completely exposed in lingerie type clothes in public but i definitley think sweats are making a come back. Theres a few brands I've found like Aviator Nation that are making comfy yet chic clothes that you can wear out and about... but see-through clothing should probably stay in the bedroom and off the streets.
