Adventures in Copyrights: Double Up

mcqueen and madden.jpgExcept for the shape of the buckle and a slight roundedness of the toe, we can't imagine how someone would tell the difference between this Alexander McQueen peep-toe and its evil Madden twin.

So when reader Marianne sent them in for our archives, we immediately thought the following:

1. If it weren't for the Steve Madden label in the shoe at right, could anyone tell which is which?

2. When did Steve Madden get so good at these carbon copies?

OH damn...they aren't playing thre really isn't that much of a diffrence other than a little nuance beteween the pattern and the shape of the buckle.

Wow, this looks like a masterpiece of immitation! It's good that you guys post stuff like this because I wouldn't want to dish out some serious $$$ only to have people think I'm wearing Steve Madden.

If SM is going to knock off AM, couldn't he at least choose the square toe pump? *sigh* I have dreams about them...

Good for Madden, these are great for those of us that want to look stylish without the price tag!

Actually, this isn't very noticeable, but if you pay attention to the detailing of the stitching in both shoes are following different directions if that made sense.

The finishing on the SM heeling looks a lot cheaper. I know that sounds crazy, but it abruptly ends and makes it look lower end.

It does look a bit cheaper but...non fashiony people wouldn't be able to tell and since I'm around those types all day...Do I have your permission to get these?

NO!! not good for Madden to copy these for the masses! Fashion is art, why would you steal someone's hard work of designing and creating something! it's comparable to petty theft and i feel sorry for you.

For shame those of you wanting to get knockoffs. obviously none of you have ever worked in the fashion industry (for a true creative company) or you would know what it takes to make unique items as opposed to those brands that simply copy and mass produce someone else's blood and sweat.

I can't say that I agree with the morality of obviously stealing someone else's hard work and unique design, but on the other hand, not everyone is able to pay for or is willing to pay for a shoe that costs over $500. You shouldn't have to always pay high prices to be considered "fashionable"

There's a difference between drawing inspiration from something and outright copying it completely.

despite being a near carbon copy, the shoe on the right manages to look too clunky. It has more of a squareness in the heel, which I think makes it look unrefined.

whoever commented saying "for shame" to those of us wanting knockoffs...
seriously?
its not like people are buying knockoffs instead of the real thing.. most people who shop at forever21 or the like wouldnt dream of spending a few hundred dollars on the "same" thing. its just not the same clientele, so its not like it's taking dime away from the designer.

plus, is it wrong to buy a print of a piece of art because its not the original? should only the small, wealthy elite be able to enjoy art?

what is wrong with u ppl? tht is a blatant knockoff. i would never buy them (i have a no-knockoff policy) and i don't think any1 should. it's ridiculous. there r shoes tht r cheap yet chic that r not knockoffs; even if theyre not quite as cute, u'll feel better inside.
