This saddens me so much, and I feel the same way you guys do. So many people knew him; we were totally honored to share time space with him. I am remembering Catherine Deneuve and a picture I saw of her once in the early 2000s. She had the YSL logo painted onto her nails. I am remembering being so excited to have taped 5 Avenue Marceau 75116 Paris off the Sundance channel, being able to watch it while the world still has VCRs. I am thinking about the white suit he designed and would later be the suit Tina Turner escaped from Ike in. I am remembering an interview Anna Wintour gave Charlie Rose about a feud Yves and she were going through. The funeral will be no doubt be huge, the effect of his departure from this world, even bigger.

There was before YSL and there is after YSL.

So weird... just went to the museum last friday here in Montreal to see an exhibition about his work...felt so good being a woman after seeing all the dresses and the beautiful creations he made!

YSL forever

Goodbye, Yves! I'll miss you.

His peak was in the 60's and 70's which was even before my time. I missed something really important.

I remember his acceptance of models of color before it was even thought of. His safari jackets which I still want. This gold lame skirt that Paloma Picasso wore that I'm still jealous of.

He was amazing. Thank you for everything, Yves.

he was sick because he suffered from long-term depression and drug and alcohol problems.

The fashion world has lost a legend. He will be missed but not forgotten.

rather a trite tribute for a designer who accomplished so much in fashion.

I'm fortunate to own one of his jackets from the 1980s, bought at a second hand shop in Paris a couple of years ago. The quality and style are amazing, quietly screaming "I am designer!" The man was a genius, and it was only reading one of the many epitaphs that I began to realise just how many things he has contributed to modern fashion - the trouser suit, the safari jacket, sheer blouses . . . . and of course, he has helped other designers, my Tom Ford/YSL dress is treasured too. I have to say I don't get the drink and drugs comments either - living to be 71 is pretty good, regardless of drinking/drug habits. There are many people who lead healthy lives who die far sooner. The man was an artist and a genius. I'm off to hunt for some more of his designs when I'm next in Paris.

I am surprised that when a true fashion legend dies that all this blog has to say is "We never met him, but god the shoes..." Your reports on The Hills and Lindsay Lohan are a million times longer, and you tell me which story is more deserving of a little research and attention!

the shoes? that's all you have to say about the man who made such an indelible mark on the 20th century? sometimes you guys are so simple minded its almost offensive.

This is all the coverage you guys do for the tragic death of a fashion icon and muse? He deserved more than that, for a website that is usually a lot more passionate about the industry and the talented faces behind it.

I don't think just saying 'the shoes' is offensive at all. It's a way of saying that there are no words, but the only way the loss can be expressed is to comment on the more iconic and affordable pieces created in his name, i.e. 'the shoes'.
