Trendspotting: On the Fringe

Jun 03, 2008 @ 3:09pm

fringe sandals.jpg

Confession: I love fringe. I love the way a fringe bag kind of makes me feel like Kate Hudson in Almost Famous, or the way a fringe skirt swishes while dancing. But fringe gladiators?

Etro first showed off their foot fringes at Spring 08, which really only distracted from their much cuter printed dresses and army jackets. Tophsop's created their own slightly darker version, and Candela NYC and Urban Outfitters opted for a shorter, more understated take on the trend.

But despite my love for the fringe, I'm not so sure that covering your legs in it is such a good idea. All that swishing noise every time you take a step? In theory, the look is a good one - think moccasins that breathe. But in on-the-street reality? We'll pass.

What about you?

i thnik the urban sandal is more of a knock off of these 3.1 phillip lim for tatami sandals...

i actually love the fringey style of sandals but not the UO ones... the fringe is too thin and looks so watered down and cheap.

but this is the type of thing that i know will be overdone and i will hate next month so i'll skip out unless i find a non-UO pair for under 50 bucks.

I was in Zara today and you left them out! They have a fringed gladiator that i passed up, as i am more of a minimalist- but you might like them. They are brown suede.

I love the fringed ones by topshop. Tried them on, but because they only have buckles at the top and bottom, the fringing in the middle kinda falls down. which is annoying.
and it looks like buckles are missing - they shoulda put one or two more somehwere in the middle.

Anywhoooo I looove fringed sandals. Will buy some if i find nice ones. Yes.

i ordered the ones from urabn outfitters in black because i love fringe too. but when i got them, they were too big and i didn't love them quite as much as i thought i would. i sent them back. now i have no idea what kind of sandals i want for summer. and i need some NOW!

Steve Madden has a cute flat pair (Kendra)they are more of a gladiator style and have a "beefier" feel than the styles shown to me. Loving the cognac color.

h&m also had fringe sandals. I agree about it looking like hair. They have to be ankle height and the fringe has to be very short to look good in my opinion!

I have the UO ones and I have to admit they're pretty much my favorite shoes right now. I've had them for a while and have gotten tons of compliments on them. I'm not sure how I feel about the knee high ones though...

i have the urban outfitters ones in black. i like the longer fringe because the shorter kind seems a bit awkward... i actually found them delightfully wacky/a bit ugly, but to me, that's a good thing, so i bought them right away.

I almost got those UO sandals a couple months ago when I was worried about what I'd have on my feet this summer. I kind of regret not getting them sometimes. . .

i'm with guest @10:31--these look terrible. i am totally anti-gladiator sandals too though, so my hatred is just following a natural progression here.

The etro and topshop versions are too over the top. I like the Candela NYC and Urban Outfitters versions way better, they are your alternative to this summers gladiator and the L.A. girls Mocc boots.
