Karolina Under Fire Hysteria

Jun 25, 2008 @ 2:13pm

karolina kurkova bikini.jpgKarolina Kurkova is:

1. Pretty.

2. Tall.

3. Blonde.

4. A Victoria's Secret Angel.

5. ...Fat?

Everybody's in a tizzy after a reporter noted the crowd's face at the Cia Maritima show in Sao Paulo this week after Karolina walked the runway, in only a bikini, looking..."chubby"?

Did we already finish sympathizing with models for the extreme pressure they're under to maintain unhealthy (and usually unflattering) weights?

We can't imagine living in a world that calls a woman fat because she may have had a few dots of cellulite on her behind while wearing approximately 1/2 yard of fabric - but oh wait, we do.

Its seems to be that shes sticking her chest out so far that shes creating rolls in her back. Also, the but of the bathing suit bottom is less than unflattering.

This is so funny because I saw her a week or so ago on 10th street and I didn't recognize her! I was like "oh, thats a hot tall girl in a cute dress and gladiators" but my model-dar didn't go off at all.

She always had a "healthy/athletic" body but she has definitely gone away from model territory. She's not a high fashion model anymore, though, so I guess the girl can eat now. Is it bad that I think she kinda looks like ANTM's Whitney, who is a "plus size" size 8?

This makes me so mad. She's not fat. She's normal looking, oh heaven's forbid there be someone on the runway who looks like the rest of us. I love fashion, don't get me wrong, but I never understood why they use people that don't even look like the majority of the audience they are selling to, to sell the clothing. Perhaps I'm pissing in the wind here but that's just my two cents (meaning: don't try and turn this into an argument, I simply won't agree with you or argue back). I clapped my hands with glee during the reign of Sophie Dahl. . . I should have known it was just a fad and it would pass.

It's sad that there's so many people out there who need to make themselves feel better by putting down someone else- someone who probably looks better than they could ever hope to look. And to basically say that someone gets paid to be anorexic is just as bad. I think she looks amazing. Maybe we should be asking ourselves what is wrong with us that we think those other models actually look good?

I think all she needs to lose is like 10lbs or so..nothing more.

I'm sorry but she looks awful in those pictures! She is paid millions of dollars for these shows and campaigns. She's not going to work at nine and coming home at five. As a model she has a responsibility to have a personal trainer and exercise! What else does she have to do during the day?

I'm surprised her agent along with the client let her walk because she does not look fit for modeling bikinis.

I don't think she is fat and yes I think she looks normal - many of us should look so good. But, she's a professional body hired to show off a product. The fashion industry has notoriously high standards and is famously critical and catty. She made a choice, she picked up a paycheck. No I don't think she looks fabulous in these shots. We've all seen her look better.

Should we be spending this much time on it? Probably not.

I think that if she was truly a model doing her job, there wouldn't be this much talk about her but rather about the actual garment she was wearing. People are supposed to be buzzing about the clothing they've seen at a show, not the model's back fat or cellulite. Clearly not the case here.

I think she's perfect as a Victoria's Secret model. Stills always make for awkward photos- I bet she looked great in the show. No-one wants to see beautiful lingerie on skinny, skinny girls (like Lily Donaldons- yuck!), with their ribs sticking out, and boobs not even big enough to fill a bra. That's not sexy at all. The photo above isn't even that bad- it's just her skin rolling up, not fat. If you just look at her arms and shoulders, you can tell she's still thin.

she is not paid millions of dollars to walk runways and be skinny. although it seems she is not high fashion skinny, i think she has gone on the the more profitable commercial stuff. plus its brazil fashion week...not exactly haute couture...

The only contracts that would equal millions of dollars is victoria's secret, makeup or perfume because they are used for many years and in many high volume magazines. And those are photoshopped so it doesn't matter that she's not stick thin. I once read that models aim for victoria's secret and makeup/perfume contracts so they can relax about the weight a bit and earn money from residuals since those are not seasonal ads and can go for years. ie become a commercial model

I agree with guest @ 6:22...the problem isn't her body -- it's that ugly bikini! And maybe the bigger issue we should be addressing is the notion of a fashion week that focuses primarily on skimpy bikinis (see: sao paulo, miami) Isn't that the real travesty here??? Maybe this story is just to provoke interest in an otherwise dull event...

I love how fashionista's link doesn't show just how ridiculous this woman looked on the catwalk.
I don't think she's fat, I think she's being a ridiculous brat for not shaping up and delivering her part of the bargain: look ridiculously good looking. In model terms that means THIN, not an inch of jelly on you. This isn't about comparing her to normal standards, this is about laziness on her part and lowering what should be super model standards.
If I had booked her I'd be naar.

I think the whole thing is outrageous. She probably shouldn't have been wearing such an unflattering bikini, but seriously. "Fat"? She's not runway-model skinny, but that's almost never healthy. I think the people calling her "fat" need to get over themselves and admit that they probably weight a hell of a lot more than Karolina. In the real world, Karolina would still be considered skinny. Fat police, fuck off.

She looks okay for an ordinary person at the beach, but awful for a model! Cia Maritima should get the millions they probably paid her back. Can you imagine the amount of Photoshop Victoria's Secret would have to use on her? I agree that in this case here, she was unprofessional. How come Naomi Campbell, in her late 30s, and Isabeli Fontana, two kids on tow, look amazing? And guest @ 11:44PM is completely wrong about SP Fashion Week being about bikinis.

Agree with the poster who asked why her agent and the client let her walk if she wasn't up to standard?

The first photo -- of her sideways -- isn't bad. It's the behind shot that's really unflattering. But I always thought she was one of the healthier-looking models, so I don't think it's that big a deal. Mildly shocking just because we're not accustomed to seeing extra weight on the runway, but certainly no reason for an outcry.

She's not fat but she could sure hire a personal trainer and tone herself up especially if she's going to be on a runway where there's going to be so many pairs of eyes judging and criticizing. There are a lot of haters out there but unfortunately, in this situation, she's not making a very good case for herself. Fat or not toned for 364 days of the year but on the day it counts, she should have pulled herself together. It is her job.

avatar

Jun 26, 2008 11:41AM

It IS her job, but she was hired by the client, she didn't parade in and demand to walk.

If the client wanted her to walk, then that's all that matters. If she were larger, and plus-size, no one would be having this discussion, and everyone would embrace how 'the industry is changing.'

As for Isabeli Fontana and Naomi Campbell stil being in shape, I tell you this: It is HARD work for a high fashion model to keep the same body for years and years, and you are basically fighting genetics every step of the way. Everyone's bodies are different, obviously.

Sure, she could use toning, but you're not going to change your bone structure now, which has obviously widened her.

What if you were to find out that she DOES work out and train and tone her body? And that her 'real body' would be a lot bigger, and this is the thinnest she can now get? You can't say 'then stop modeling' to someone like KK who still earns about 6 or 7 million a year.

Lighten up, people. It's a human being we're scrutinizing.

hate to say it but she was UNFIT to be walking around in a bikini on a runway. There is a big different between being fit and healthy which IS A LARGER size than model fit but she was flabby skinny - completely untoned and looked like she was sucking in a small tummy. A good body for average woman - not one that should have been on a runway for bikiniwear.

She is paid to look gorgeous, make clothes look gorgeous, and entice potential buyers that the clothes she wears on the runway are for them. Point blank: in those brasilian fotos she looks very unflattering.
