Naomi Campbell, Ciao Brasil!

Jun 16, 2008 @ 1:50pm

Naomi CampbellPreparations for New York Fashion Week are already starting, but before we get to Bryant Park, we've got to hit Brazil.

Their Fashion Week at Sao Paulo is imminent, and to kick it off, they're importing some big deals:

According to sources, both Naomi Campbell and Gisele Bundchen are heading down to stomp out the week on the runways.

Exciting, right?

Brazil houses some very cool labels, including Alexandre Herchcovitch, Maria Bonita, and Rosa Cha. Calvin Klein's creative director, Francisco Costa, is from Brazil, as is Abaete designer Laura Poretzsky.

And let's not forget the models: Gisele, Caroline Trentini, Raquel Zimmerman, Jeisa Chiminazzo, Adriana Lima, and Alessandra Ambrosio are all Brazilian -

As is Fashionista mascot, Cintia Dicker!

Yes, Syako is right. They say ciao in Portuguese but it's spelled tchau, and it means goodbye only.

guys - ciao is commonly used to just say "hi" in a lot of languages. yes, it comes from italian and means "bye" but it's been adopted as an informal "hey" by a lot of languages, portuguese being one of them. i grew up hearing "ciao" all the time, and not just by italian people - by portuguese and spanish.

yeah, but we're talking about Brazil.
and it's tchau as in goodbye in Brazilian, Angolan or Mozambican Portuguese.

Oi Brasil! That's what it should be ;) I am a Brazilian designer based in Los Angeles and I am so glad to see that my country is finally getting more recognition in the fashion world! I hope that the trend continues. If you'd like to check out my clothes, look at my website: www.fernandacarneiro.com :)

Tchau! Beijos!

Yeah, São Paulo Fashion Week is quite a huge deal. Rio also has a fashion week with some really cool brands too and it was usual for big names to come too, even if it isn't as big as the SP one. Gisele came every single year but the brand she has a contract with, Colcci, is moving to SPFW this year so yeah... Paris Hilton came once too (for the same brand) but I don't think that's something to be proud of...

Anyway:
Ciao - Italian for "hi" and "bye"
Tchau - It's pronounced the same way but it means "bye" only. In Brazil you'll NEVER EVER hear anybody saying "tchau" when it means "hi". Nobody writes "ciao" either since it's spelling is "tchau". Since it means "bye", it's one of the most commonly used words in Portuguese.
Oi - Hi
Olá - Hello

Darling Natalie, I´m a brazilian living in Brazil and I had never said, in my entire live, ciao at these lands. Only Tchau [same sound], but, as already written, the meaning here is goodbye.

Other thing, it´s Sao Paulo, not Sao Paolo; Paolo is italian too. = )
