NY Pushes Beauty and the Geek Bill

iekeliene stange wavy hair.jpgSome politics:

New York State Representative Anthony Weiner is looking out for foreign models hoping to work in NYC. He’s worried that the current immigration policy, which lumps non-American models together with highly in-demand non-American computer engineers both looking for work in the US, is edging all the foreign beauties out.

Rep. Weiner argues that the photoshoots these models participate in are precious to the New York economy, and keeping them out doesn’t create opportunities for American models - instead, it just means that photographers will take their shoots overseas. So he’s pushing for foreign models to be moved into another visa category, P-4, the one reserved for athletes and entertainers.

According to his report, the government used to issue more than double the number of visas to aspiring foreign models than what was issued last year, back when the number of high-tech workers was much lower. As a result, more computer geeks, less babes.

His bill was cleared last week, though it still needs to get through the Senate before taking effect.

Funniest part of the bill: It states that “the visiting model must be “of distinguished merit and ability.” We think that’s nice talk for 5’10” and over, and, well, you know…

That makes sense...I think they should be in the same category as entertainers.

I think NY politicans have WAY MORE IMPORTANT things to worry about.

I agree with both of the commenters above me, even though they make different points...what the rep. is doing only makes sense, but if he spent more than an hour on it, I want some tax money back!

"but if he spent more than an hour on it, I want some tax money back!"

LOL. That's priceless! and spot on.

I hate it when we get smart hard working tech geeks in this country. It makes me so mad. ;)

this is hilarious that these are the kind of bills he's pushing for but he does have a point and i suppose this has to get fixed some time or another.
