"Secrecy has clouded Sex and the City since it was first announced. When would the film appear? Who would find a husband? Would one of the main characters die? If so, would she commit suicide by self-pity (a constant threat), or would a crocodile escape from the Bronx Zoo and wreak a flesh-ripping revenge for all those handbags? As the release date neared, the paranoia thickened; at the screening I attended, we were asked not only to surrender our cell phones but to march through a beeping security gate, as if boarding a plane to Tel Aviv. There was even a full-body pat-down, by far the biggest turn-on of the night. Not a drop of the forthcoming plot had been leaked in advance, but I took a wild guess. "Apparently," I said to the woman behind me in line, "some of the girls have problems with their men, break up for a while, and then get back together again." "Oh, my God!" she cried. "How do you know?" - Anthony Lane's story, from The New Yorker.

Anthony Lane wrote a very sexist review from the point of view of a an old male.

Why are you quoting this incredibly offensive, misogenistic review? Guest at 10:26 was correct, the review was sexist and obnoxious, as was the illustration. I am disappointed that Fashionista is spreading around this article as though Lane did nothing wrong.

***SPOILER****

"Is this really where we have ended up—with this superannuated fantasy posing as a slice of modern life?"

Ok, I'm taking this quote totally out of context, but I wanted to comment anyway.

I actually felt that the movie did the opposite - it stripped the glamour from their lives. Carrie marries in a label-less suit, at city hall, and has a reception dinner at a fast food joint, while kids and boring, married couples abound. Miranda isn't having sex anymore, doesn't have time to wax (this is the show that brought us the brazilian), and has gained a bunch of weight (bathing suit scene in mexico, anyone?). Samantha - same thing.

The fairy tale ending (the pre-war penthouse, the vivienne westwood gown and the huge, public wedding) wasn't realistic and couldn't happen, even though the entire show was a fairy tale. It brought them down to earth. I think this guy's criticisms are about 4 years too late.

I really do not see how the review was misogynistic.

Anthony lane's review is absolutely spot on...
I was after some exciting fashion/costumes but the leading ladies lost their sparkle a while ago.
SATC the movie is absolutely disastrous.
