Would You Rather Dye?

Jun 09, 2008 @ 3:17pm

Picture 1.pngThere's an ongoing discussion in our office about whether or not it's ok to dye your hair at home.

I've experimented with it more than once, mostly blonde highlights in an attempt to recreate the perfect California beach hair I possessed naturally until moving to the east coast.

Luckily, it's never turned orange or fallen out or cost me more than $10, and it's a pretty good alternative to getting a tattoo which is what I usually want to do when I'm bored.

However, it's never looked like Gwyneth's either. I'm aware there's a reason colorists have their jobs - it's a science and an art rolled into one and they're the ones trained to make your hair look pretty and more importantly, natural. Each time I've let a friend brush cheap chemicals onto my hair I've taken comfort in the fact that someone out there can fix it if I actually end up looking cheap.

But the rest of the office (all two of them today), balks at the the idea of color from a box, saying you're most likely to come out looking brassy or brittle, and are better off just not dying it at all.

I'm sticking to lemon juice this summer, but are you intrigued by the Garnier boxes? Or do you save your pennies for salon only treatments?

I only go darker at home, after an ill-fated college bleaching in the dorm bathroom.

As for "brassy & brittle": not at all. Again, if you're not going lighter, it's very easy and forgiving, unless you're doing a drastic haircolor change.

It so totally depends on your hair and what color you want. I have golden blonde hair naturally but I went through a brunette phase a year ago, and I used like, clairol naturals hazelnut or something. It was easy, worked like a charm, and looked very natural. Other people look, as you said, cheap, because they try to do too much with too little.

Been there done that. Tried multiple times in my early high school years to make my dark brown hair light brown/dark blonde. Combine at home lightening with constant sun exposure and you get a head that is glowing so orange it can be seen from outerspace. Darkening is one thing, but at home lightening is a HUGE mistake.

I did it a few months ago because I didn't want to spend three hours in a salon anymore. I don't think I will ever, ever do it again. It's a really pretty color but not the one on the box.

My roomate once went through this faze of trying to get that pretty golden hue, and it just kept getting worse and worse every time she tried to fix it. After probably 3 blonde-in-a-box jobs in only 2 days, she ended up looking like that singer vitamin c, burnt to a crisp. I could not stop laughing.

On the other hand, I use the toner every so ofted to gloss my dark hair back to life, and it always comes out brilliantly.

I find that salon jobs

a) last longer
b) are more likely to get EXACTLY what I want the first time around.

I'm a convert :)))

Of course it's ok. It's a personal choice.

I've had a few disaster dye jobs (going lighter) at Toni&Guy and Paul Mitchell salons, so, really, sometimes it's a roll of the dice. For going darker, I think the box is just fine, especially if you have an experienced friend to help you out.

I rather be in the salon for 3 hours, getting my hair done then let a friend or myself color my hair. And it only takes 3 hours for whole head highlights. Salon coloring equals natural, and not having that hideous striped look so many people have

i have light brown hair, and used revlon frost and glow for years. since it's a frosting kit and not a highlighting kit, it never comes out orange. i know that sounds tacky/old/totally 80's, but it gave the perfect "jennifer aniston" blonde/brown highlights. $10 too!

I was such a drug-store hair product junkie!! Sun-In, at home highlighting kits, all different brands of color! But in the end I find it really is best to go to the salon. I have nurtured my hair, which is most always blonde, except for those compulsive urges I've had to dye it brown, back from the brittle, off-color mess that it was, by visting only the salon for the past two years. I won't even buy as much as an at-home glossing kit now and I am a deep conditioning queen. Just say no, kids.

I find that chlorine + sun = natural highlights for free. By far the best option.

OK: I find them tempting. They're like a particularly colorful wrapper which conceals candy you immediately regret eating.

I mean, I haven't dyed my hair since mid-high school, when I could only afford box treatments, and I haven't had highlights since junior year of college---- so I guess you could say I'm over color altogether. But if and when I go gray, and start dying it again, you better bet I'll spring the extra green for a colorist.

After leaving the salon in tears one too many times I quit doing it. I have been cutting and coloring my own hair for 7 years now and I'll never turn back. Not only is it cheaper but I always get what I ask for. Also if something does go wrong it didn't cost me a fortune. More importantly it looks good. People always ask me where I get my hair done. I've had more then a few people leave their salons and come to my house to have it fixed.

honestly, i usually use a box of color on my hair. i've had a couple mishaps (mostly with highlights) over the years, but for the most part, i've had good results. i like to change my color pretty often and my hair is still healthy. sometimes i like to splurge on going to the salon for the professional touch, but most of the time, i use hair color from the drugstore!

i would say at home is better if you want to go darker or do more rock and roll dye jobs with bleach and/or manic panic and you aren't looking for too specific results. at home lightening/highlighting is never a good idea, people who do it may think it looks great but it is 99.999999% of the time cheesy and horrible looking. oh and if you get natural highlights in the summer, use a little lemon juice and chlorine and give your hair some time in the sun to lighten, NEVER use sun-in unless you want orange hair and roots.

i have black hair...naturally dark dark black hair...so that color has to be lifted w/ bleach before any other color can be put on. i would never ever do that at home (for highlights) b/c i know i'd eff it up. in the past i've gone to the salon for that and gotten funky colored highlights...bright red and plum. those fade fast so i've redone it at home on my own. the thing w/ my hair is the non-bleached parts don't pick up any color (maybe just the slightest tint), so i just do the color all over and wash off. it's nice not having to be precise. if i was any other hair color, i'd never do it myself.

I've only paid to get my hair colored at a salon twice in my life. I've been dyeing my hair for 6-7 years now at home, including bleaching it twice, black, pink, brown, blonde highlights... and a lot of people have asked me where I get my hair done. Salon d'Mom. Less than 10 bucks every couple of months and I've only had to correct a bad tint once. I am a huge advocate of at home hair dye, if you couldn't tell. It helps that my hair is naturally light brown and takes color/bleaches really easily.

and sun-in is GREAT if you have light hair to begin with.

I have dark brown hair and I've gone super light (the l'oreal preference colors made for lightening brown hair are AMAZING) and super dark and been every shade of brown in between there is, all from boxes and its never gone wrong. The one time I had my hair dyed in salon I absolutely hated it. I kind of think its a luck thing. Although I would never opt for the cheap hair color, and deep conditioning is a must every once in a while just to avoid serious damage because it definitely takes a toll.

I spent close to $400 last year to look like a scarecrow with fried straw-like orange streaks. It was awful.

Going darker just looks shinier and healthy, and when you are half grey at 28, you don't have a lot of options without selling your body on the streets!

I love L'Oreal, but i do splurge a whopping $15 at a time.

box color is sooo bad for your hair! feria actually has glass particles in the dye to make it hold better. if you use box colors to go dark, good luck ever going light again. you'll have to spend hours in the salon getting that junk stripped out of your hair. it's so much better just to go to the salon, they'll make sure you look good, and your hair won't take a month to recover from the box chemicals...

I am so against box colour, I used them for years with great results, but all it took was one instance where my friend (who has been doing her own blonde hair for years) used Feria, went outside in the sun for 10 minutes, and her hair literally began to fall out. Sje got the nastiest burn on her scalp. The Doctor said it was from the metal in the dye. It has taken her a FULL YEAR to calm down her scalp and re-grow the hair. Plus, she couldn't dye it at all. So, the stuff they put in those boxes totally freaks me out. I go to the salon always.

I coloured my own hair for the past year and a half using variouis L'Oreal box colours and in general it looked awful! As a poor fashion assistant there is no way I could have afforded a salon. I just hate my naturally dark brown hair and have always lightened it. In any kind of direct light it glowed bright orange and looked very brittle/dry/brassy. As soon as I could afford it I went to a salon and my hair isn't only healthier and glossy looking, the colour is a lovely medium brown and most importantly looks natural and even-toned! I will never go back to box colour again unless it's to go darker.

I have light-to-medium brown hair and also used the Frost and Glow during junior high/high school, and since I naturally had some highlights and didn't overdo it, it always looked relatively natural. It wasn't until my dye-addict friend suggested that I use an overall box dye that my hair turned into a strawberry blonde frizzy mess. I had to go to a salon to fix that disaster (after several attempted self-remedies) and will never trust myself to dye my hair again

I've been coloring, highlighting, and now covering gray at home for ~20 years. In that time I've had many salon colorings as well but always left with the feeling they weren't worth the money. So for me--color in a box works just great. I've never had a problem with my hair texture or odd colors. We all have different priorities on how/where we want to spend money, and salon color just isn't in my top 10 :-)

I dyed my hair for about a year (from a medium brown to a dark brown), and during that time I got in done in a salon for the first time, and then it dyed it from the box from then on. I liked the colour from the box better (my hairstylist gave me one that made my hair a little too reddish-brown for my taste); however, although my hair stayed shiny, when I dyed it from the box, I did have a lot of hair fall out (not noticeable on my head or anything, but about 10 -15 strands would come out every time I showered). This was about a year and a half ago, and I'm considering going back to that colour, but I can't decide if I want to use a box or the salon.

never had my hair dyed in a salon. I've always done it myself and I've tried very bright colors, natural tones and bleach - no disaster ;)

Note, though, I have quite dark hair and the bright colors wouldn't show up as bright reds or oranges as the picture on the boxes.

My mom also dyes her hair at home only and has never had any problems. If you read the instructions and do it carefully, you shouldn't have problems... unless you're trying something absolutely outrageous!

I'm totally into at home dyeing. However I have agranny who use to dye/ cut hair professionally so that helps. Plus my mom charges a lot less than a salon--(only cost is the box of dye)nothing. The one time I would recommend getting a professional job is any time you need to bleach your hair before you dye it to the desired color. One time I tried to go from red to blond-NOT FUN. 2 bleachings,1 toner, and 6 hours later my hair finally resembeled a shade of blond!
