Victoria Goes To College

pink pants.jpgVictoria’s Secret Pink label is partnering with the Collegiate Licensing Company.

So if you’ve always dreamed of hot pink sweatpants with your alma mater plastered on the back or a teeny tiny neon thong with your university’s mascot, you’re in luck!

Pink, a “fully articulated collegiate lifestyle brand,” will sell sweats, tees, underwear and bags associated with thirty-three “top” schools starting on July 1.

They picked the lucky colleges based on regional appeal and alumni populations. Which means they think you’ll want to buy this stuff even if you graduated ten years ago.

We can’t wait to see Behati on a billboard with “HARVARD” stamped on her ass.

Quite a change from Chanel’s runways, no?

Included universities:

University of Alabama
Arizona State University
University of Arkansas
Auburn University
UC Berkeley
Boston College
Clemson University
University of Colorado
Florida State University
University of Florida
University of Georgia
Harvard
University of Illinois
University of Kansas

What's a "top school"? Is that code for a "private" university rather than a public or land-grant university? What's with the school snobbery? There are plenty of good schools on this list, and good scholars and students at those places.

Agree with the guest at 1:18--- They're marketing to the schools that have large numbers of students who will buy their products. So this post really doesn't call for a debate of what defines a "top" school. They're all big schools with well-known names, and I'm sure they all have their fair share of genuinely smart people and total morons, as any college does.

First let me say my school is on here - but i think it's safe to say that the only reason these schools are on the list is because, like the release said, of regional appeal and alumni populations. that is why "top" is in quotation marks.

It's Vic Sic's own subjective opinion based on marketing.

while i wouldn't say there are no 'top schools' on the list, there is definitely a lack of private schools, which makes sense since "univ. of state x" schools are often the biggest ones, and thus create a bigger market.

also, i think by 'top' they don't mean necessarily in sports or academics, but just that it's not the "theodore smith university of alaska" or something - as in not obscure schools no one has heard of.

but anyway, don't most schools already sell this exact same merchandise?

You kids need to get down from your high horses. If you don't go to these schools then you don't really know what you are talking about. Lots of these schools are great, whether public or private. You need to think of marketing strategy to see why these schools were chosen. Top is subjective, like most other things.

pink obviously picked schools with the largest student bodies, alumni bases, and have an appeal that would make people buy something with the school's name on it even if they don't have any connection to the school (come on, you know you love your harvard tees and tar heels sweats) because they want to maximize profits. basically, even if a historically black/hispanic etc. or liberal arts school is considered a "top" school, it wasn't included because it isn't widely known among pink's customer base and/or alienates certain potential customers because of their race or location and whatnot. so chill guys, maybe if the line's a success they'll include more schools, but until then, realize it isn't a matter of racism or US News and World Report reputation, but of a company making smart business decisions in order to the most money.

My point is you don't hear other races complaining about the lack of their 'race' being marketed to..

If there is obvious racism then definitely speak up about it but when ppl bring up a particular race in a very generic marketing campaign (this case being to universities/colleges) they are calling attention to a particular race eventhough race didn't even come into play.

It's like, the boy who cried wolf.. you can't play the race card every time.. it gets old when there's a lot of other races out there that get overlooked yet deserves just as much attention.

I totally agree with guest at 7:05 AM this is about money people nothing more nothing less. Limited Brands is a huge corporation that wants nothing more than our cash. As for the whole race thing it both saddens and sickens me, I'm not one to pull the race card, but I see how overlooking an HBCU could offend some people. However in the grand scheme of things how many people have heard of Howard, Hampton, or Spellman outside of the African American community? Again this is a marketing ploy. Ask youself how many Alabama natives will buy a pair of shorts that say Auburn vs Tuskegee or in Louisiana ones that say LSU vs Xavier? Yes this is a gross oversight by both Limted Brands, who own VS BTW, and America. As an African American female who attended a a white university I must say that you cannot live your life always looking for signs of racism, that will ensure that every interaction you have with those of a different race will undoubtably lead to you feeling offended. And with that note I parrot Syako in saying GEAUX TIGERS!!!

It seems like they just chose the schools with the largest sorority presence...and then they just threw in Harvard to legitimize things. Although, SMU and Ole Miss are notably absent, so my prediction could be wrong. None of my schools made the list, but my undergrad was, uh, "blessed" with a Chip and Pepper rendition, which is almost embarrassing. Somehow, I must survive another day without my alma mater splashed across my ass. And to the posters above, I would call Berkeley, BC, Harvard, UNC, UCLA, and yes, Michigan all "legitimate," but some of the smartest people I knew all went to other schools on the list because they couldn't afford tuition to their top choices...
