High on Rubber

Jun 16, 2008 @ 3:41pm

lamb sneaker wedge.jpgWalking down Fifth this weekend I saw not one, not two, but three different girls dressed in a variety of outfits accompanied by sneaker wedges.

Yes, sneaker wedges.

Each time I saw a pair walk by, I stopped and watched them stomp past me and thought to myself, "Why?"

Sure, they're a combination of the most comfortable shoe out there with one of the cutest, but let's face it, it's a high-heeled sneaker, which is a little like slapping a heel onto an Ugg and calling it evening wear.

They could be cute underneath a pair of wide-leg jeans, but only because you wouldn't see the entire shoe. This is literally the only instance we can think of.

We just plain don't get this one - Are they meant for Posh Spice-wannabes in Phys Ed? Or are rubber triangles under otherwise normal sneakers the new Croc? As in, something hideous that we better get used to seeing around anyway?

Someone please explain, quickly.

I saw a girl wearing them on the subway this morning with ankle-length skinny jeans. Not my favorite look.

I saw a pair in a friend's pictures from the the Boston gay pride parade. On a drag queen...

I kind of think they're awesome.

This reminds me of the platform sneakers the popular girls wore in high school 10 years ago. Not a good look then, not a good look now.

I love these because I HATE regular sneakers but think these look great with outfits that call for sneakers but with a girly twist. Sometimes I don't feel like flip flops (which is what I normally wear instead of sneakers).

Hmm.. I'm not a fan of sneaker wedges... but I do rather like wedges that lace up. Am I just splitting hairs here?

I really, really, really crush on the Chanel lace up, peep toe wedge boot things from SS '08. Is that so wrong?

These remind me of 5th grade when sneakers with a chunky high heel were popular. Why would you want to bring that back?

weren't we talking once about articles of clothing/accessories that would stop us from being friends with, seen with, or talking with a person?

On second though, maybe maybe MAYBE with a pair of nice dark, skinny jeans. Once again, MAYBE.

Not to be a total outcast, but my friend wears them well, and this is how:
Black Dries + Black Tights + Black oversized man's sweater + short black Mia Farrow hair. Yes, it's a little boho tech, and you need sturdy calves to not look awful, but it CAN be done well.

I guiltily liked the Dries ones when they first came out- possibly because it was a different look I wasn't used to, but every similar style after that, I hated.

It really depends on the shoe and how it's designed. It could possibly be very chic and innovative.

guest @ 6:23: you just gave me hope that it would ever, in a million years, be a good thing to have "sturdy" calves..

(said as lifelong owner--and loather--of said calves-style)

I remember on that Victoria Beckham Comes to America show a while back she had to find tall sneakers to wear when she threw the first pitch at the LA baseball game because she *never* wore anything without heels. She looked good though.

I was shoe shopping today for two intense hours all over downtown and all shoes are SO ugly or impracticle these days. Miserable. I don't know that I was tempted by a single pair the whole time. These are ugly too.
