Why We Love The LA Times

Jun 02, 2008 @ 11:06am

Lohan in Nina Ricci This weekend, The Los Angeles Times discusses a budding brew between Sarah Jessica Parker and Nina Ricci.

As you all know, SJP wore a Theyskens gown to the NYC premiere of Sex and the City - the same gown that Lauren Santo Domingo wore to the Met Ball about a month ago; the same gown that Lindsay Lohan trashed up in Harper's Bazaar before that.

SJP is peeved because Nina Ricci told her the dress was exclusively hers, and she tells Cathy Horyn at The Times that "there is a relationship between the entertainment industry and fashion. We've watched sales dwindle and we've watched people be less inclined to spend money on clothes."

LA blogger Monica Corcoran's reaction?

"[My blog] loves the passive-aggressive threat appliqued to Parker's statement.... Parker's comment about dwindling sales seems to suggest that only red carpet exposure will save a label. Um, do you really think SATC fans ran out to buy this silver gown after seeing it at the premiere?"

It's pretty funny, albeit a little harsh - obviously, SJP would want some crazy new dress for the biggest movie event of her life, and she's incredulous that a fashion house lied to her about it - but it's not the best part of the story.

That goes to what the LA Times labeled their photo of Lohan in the Nina Ricci dress. Download the photo from the site, and notice it's name:

ADDICT IN A PRETTY DRESS.jpg

Hey Monica, can we buy you a drink?

I think Parker was classy as usual here. She admitted it wasn't the end of the world, but that Nina Ricci's actions were unethical.

Ahahahahaha!! That is the best part of the story.
SJP is overreacting, but poor thing, she thought the Theyskens was her little baby I guess... :P

It's not the dress that people will go out and buy, but the Nina Ricci shoes, bags, smaller ticket items, just to brush up against the cachet the label gets from being associated with a certain celebrity. Nina Ricci was a stuffy old house until Mr Theyskens came and worked his magic. (Remember the awful smelling perfume, L'air du Temps?) They knew that SJP wearing it would boost sales of other items, and they did not want to risk her wearing another designer by telling her it was worn before to an event (and by someone, Lauren Santo Domingo, who could well afford not to borrow a dress). It really leaves a bad taste in my mouth about the fashion world that I love so dearly. It makes it seem so cutthroat, not beautiful at all.

The best part of the article is hidden behind the pics! The Lindsay caption is priceless! I hope Monica does not get any flak from it!

ahahahaha.. I'm going to do that from now on on more sites.. see what they label their documents. And I think I'm with SJP on this one. I mean, the guy blatantly told her that it had never been worn. I wonder if she'll ever be going back there?

Def w/ SJP on this one. As always, she handled the situation w/ class, but imagine HER getting a dress for teh SATC premiere that was not only worn before, but worn in very high profile settings. She def deserves something more avant garde.

Fashionursta, you beat me to it! The red carpet gowns are free advertisements for the brand names, and not for the gowns themselves.

Theyskens doesn't even apologize. After this, I wonder if other celebrities will hesitate to wear his gowns. That seems to be SJP's intention, by going public with this.

Lindsay looks not so good in the dress.. and SJP did the outfit justice and I believe we wouldn't go out to buy the dress but it familiarizes lots of fans with the name until it becomes almost subconscious why we would want a product with that label attached to it. She didn't over react, she merely stated the relationship between fashion and the film industry/celebrities.

Do SJP and her people live in a hole? Do they not read Bazaar,or pay attention to photos. Correct me if I am wrong, but SJP was not at the met ball right? But the fact that she, and the people around her were completely oblivious to any red carpet photos of that evening is not only hard to believe, but its lazy.

I guess props to her for not paying close attention to media, but that dress has been EVERYWHERE and if she cared (and i wont even go into why she shouldnt have)she should have done her research.

I really like SJP and her attitude towards life, but this is very hypocritical of her. She looked fab, she should not have even blinked at if another person had worn the dress before.

Anyone remember this story: The Chanel people told Reese Witherspoon that the dress she was wearing to the Golden Globes was vintage...how vintage? Kirsten Dunst wore the same dress a few years before. http://socialitelife.celebuzz.com/2006/01/19/the_fallout_from_the_reese_witherspoon_chanel_dress_debacle.php

shinyredthermos: i don't think sjp is the kind of person that reads blogs and checks out the style.com parties section. if olivier and the people from nina ricci/piug told her it was only worn in editorials (ie, lindsay), not once but on multiple occasions, why would she have hasn't been everywhere (only used in the one ed with lindsay in the u.s.), and the one marion wore was a different dress (similar cut, but different fabric). the more photographed (and used in editorials) nina ricci dress is the "mercury," which was worn by ellen pompeo (silver draped velvet).

she was totally right in calling them out...she could have chosen any number of designers and she picked nina ricci and because they wanted the exposure, they were not forthright with her.

What about the stylist (s) that SJP uses? Arent they supposed to do their due diligence (like what you pay a lawyer to do when she goes over a contract for you?) Isn't that what you pay them for?

Less annoyed with her not noticing it had been worn before. More annoyed that she cares.

You would think that even if SJP doesn't follow the different blogs, and fashion sections, one of the many people advising her would have. After all, isn't that their job? I have no doubt that she could have called up any essentially any of the design houses less than a week before the premier, and they would all have been more than happy to help her out.
I do agree that Theyskens should have been honest with her. However, I think that SJP and/or her advisors need to take some responsibility here.

I think the problem is not whether or not someone has worn the dress, but in the honestly of the people at Nina Ricci. Their credibility is lost based on the fact that they apparently lied.

SATC was a pivotal fashion show, starting numerous trends and making designers (hello, manolos!)so there definitely should be a level of respect between designers and SJP.

There was also obviously going to be tons of paps at the premier taking lots of pics of SJP in that dress. She should have been able to trust the designer who she had chosen to wear instead of having to search through numerous blogs to see if someone might have worn it before her.

To shinyredthermos:
I think the point SJP is trying to make is that she was lied to. She has every right to care about that! Also she is a celebrity and her name is so closely affiliated to all things fashionable in so many consumer minds. So obviously there was much to be gained by Ricci's people by getting her to wear the dress. I believe she knows she was intentionally deceived. Umm and I don't think anyone would NOT care if they were intentionally deceived.
And how many people like to wear things that are unique, rather than the same thing everyone else (or even someone else) has already worn? There is no harm in wanting to wear something new!
What really bothers me is that people think she isn’t allowed to complain for being deceived. SJP's stylist may not have done their part, but she doesn't deserve to be lied to.
