Romper Boom
Jul 02, 2008 @ 2:36pm
We probably haven't thought about dELiAs since about the 5th grade when we were still wearing butterfly clips in our hair and henna chokers around our necks. But a few weeks ago, when we stopped a cute looking streetwalker, the brand was brought back to our attention - to our surprise, her outfit was from dELiAs. This got us thinking, maybe we could find something equally cute from this surprising source? And to our incredulity, it wasn't even that hard!
Case in point: this Safari style romper. We're big fans of the romper for summer, and this one in particular is really doing something for us. Can you imagine anything more comfortable for summer than a short, loose, one-piece made entirely from linen? We can't.
Besides from looking extra comfy, we have already thought of about a hundred ways to accessorize this baby. We could totally picture it at the beach with a headscarf and flip-flops, or around the city in gladiators with a skinny brown belt cinching the waist. Plus at $34.50, we know this one's all fun.

Freja Found
Jul 02, 2008 @ 2:04pm
A few of you, like us, have wondered where some of the bigger models have been during this week's couture shows.
Thanks to Rajni over at NYLON, we at least have roll call for Freja figured out -
She snapped the Danish dudette walking the Hope show at Stockholm Fashion Week yesterday, with gawkers aplenty staring on behind her.
We think this is one of the nicer runway shots we've seen of her - rested, kind of casual, totally at ease.
On an only somewhat related note, we think all Stockholm Fashion Week shows should include free Swedish fish for everyone in gift bags...
H, A, Double L, O. Double U, Double E, N Spells... Trend?
Jul 02, 2008 @ 1:30pm
Traditionally a taboo color combination, the pairing of orange and black dominated the runways for Fall 08. Orange accents paired with black ensembles made bold appearances, seen in the high collars at Prada and the opaque tights at Alessandro Dell' Acqua.
Aquascutum, Christian Lacroix, Gaultier and Narciso Rogriguez reversed the new combination, swapping out the traditional little black dress for more vibrant orange creations paired with opaque tights in black and burnt orange.
Moschino Cheap & Chic did their own version of Halloween-chic with a black and orange printed coat, and Comme des Garcons took the trend to new heights with a voluminous tulle skirt and top, finished off with black tights and dreadlocks.
We've always considered black and orange to be a spooky combination worn only on the day of the dead, but since it's now a runway trend, will we start seeing it on all the other days, too?

Streetwalker: Pattern Making
Jul 02, 2008 @ 12:49pm
Ariella, Assistant to the Editor-in-Chief (Marvin) at NYLON
Got her: At Greene and Prince
Stalked her: Because amidst a sea of white and black frocks, her patterned dress really stood out.
Shot her: Because at first we couldn't figure out if she was sporting a shirt tucked into a skirt or a simple dress - but we loved the pattern, shape and the way it blouses on top and then tapers at the hips and thighs - flattering and comfortable is always a good look.
She says: Thats so funny, I work with Faran at NYLON!
We say: We love a fashion coincidence.

Adventures in Copyright: Drip Drip
Jul 02, 2008 @ 11:01am
Oops. We put some time and effort into a Sergio Rossi DIY a couple of months ago.
They didn't look perfect, but they were still fun and definitely had more character than these.
The paint drip started popping up in places both vintage and new, but Steve Madden got so distracted by Carrie Bradshaw's shoes, he forgot to copy one of the coolest summer trends.
Which gave GoJane time to make what they call the "Stripe Colorblock Heel". The drip is almost exactly the same. The problem is the high cut toe, the chunky-too-short heel, and the plastic looking sheen.
And for $18.99? We dare you to wear them more than once.

"The "morning after" look has morphed from ignominy to desirability -- the walk of shame has become chic. Pick up any tabloid and there they all are, the cream of London's youth, working the look. Peaches and Pixie, Agyness Deyn and Alexa Chung, all caught in daylight dressed in night-before clothes -- metallics, men's cardigans, smudgy make-up, unbrushed hair and a squirt of eau de sex." - Alice B-B, on the walk of shame, in the London Times.
Chloe Sevigny: Still Kickin
Jul 02, 2008 @ 10:01am
There is life yet for Chloe Sevigny's Opening Ceremony collection.
While on Topshop, we came across their new Post-War Precision collection (originally called the Valerie Collection, though we don't know why they changed the name). Topshop describes it as "1950s pin-up styling with a rockabilly twist", but between the checkered pieces, acid wash jean jacket and ditsy floral print dresses we thought "We Wish We Were Chloe Sevigny" would have been a more apt description.
Just take a gander at these high-wasted checked pants. Remind you of anything? We thought so. Similarily, this blouse by Topshop is almost an exact replica of one Chloe turned out for Opening Ceremony (although in the picture it's shown in floral, Chloe also made one in basic white), one of the more wearable pieces of the collection. And these tiny floral printed shorts are very reminiscent of Chloe's floral skirt. Topshop even went as far as a floral bustier, one of the more signature pieces from Chloe's collection (ps. we're still not sure who's buying these). [Editor's note: Natalie loves Chloe's floral bustier!]
The Topshop stuff is actually really cute (thankfully, they stayed away from midriff baring tops) but our reaction was overshadowed by the same sneaking suspicion we had when we tried the items on last March in Opening Ceremony, or maybe it was last April and at Urban Outfitters. Either way, we're wondering why, amidst less than positive reviews, the Sevigny collection has had such a strong influence on retailers.
Perhaps Chloe was on to something, but it's a shame her designs are being copied more often than worn.

Tears for McQueen
Jul 02, 2008 @ 9:30am

Someone asked me yesterday, "What will you do when/if you get to go to a McQueen show?"
I'd cry.
And he told me, "Well duh! Everyone cries at McQueen."
Ok. So I might scream, then jump up and down, then play it cool and then probably cry at the show because his clothes are so beautiful and cry after the show because I won't be wearing them for a very long time.
If you feel the same, go to Style.com right now and start clicking through pictures - both party and couture - but look at the ads on the right instead of the pretty people on the left.
That's where I saw this ad.
Maybe we can both win?
See you in Paris.
Vogue Italia, Still En Route
Jul 02, 2008 @ 9:00am
Considering that it's now July 2nd, most of us thought that the incredibly anticipated issue of Vogue Italia would already be on newsstands, at least in Europe.
But worry not - according to the Wall Street Journal, none of us are missing out since the magazine isn't even available in Italy yet.
They say that the all-black models edition doesn't actually come out in Italy until this Friday, and will finally be available in the States next week.
So maybe those 25 pages of "where is it?!" on The Fashion Spot can finally get some scans this week.
