People seemed uneasy about Stefano Pilati’s use of heather gray jersey on YSL’s spring ‘08 runway - until Kate Moss wore this dress in the ads and everyone else wanted to wear it, too.
The thing that keeps it from being a glorified American Apparel-esque sweatshirt tube dress is the expert tailoring, the thin fabric and the sharply cut front ‘V’.
Unfortunately, when Topshop decided to copy it, they left out those important factors. The color’s the same, so are the darts and the length, but you can tell, just from seeing it float in internet space, that it won’t be flattering on anyone.
Not even Kate - and that says a lot.
If you happen to find yourself in Dallas between the dates of July 31 and September 6, we already have an event that we think you should attend -
The Light & Sie gallery (129 Leslie Street, 214.745.2255 - Tuesdays through Saturdays, noon to 5pm) is hosting a group exhibition called Sehnsucht (translated loosely from German, you get “longing” or “aspiration”) including photography from Vanessa Beecroft and Jeremy Kost (of RoidRage fame and Fashionista Fashion Week backstage coverage), alongside Hedi Slimane.
The works are meant to investigate the notion of beauty in contemporary art, and how it’s approached by artists working in a variety of mediums.
We won’t be in Dallas on July 31, but if you are, we urge you to go. And if you do, can you please ask Hedi about Dior Homme?
Thanks.
An invite just came in the mail - to a Pink Plastic Party.
Of course it’s in LA, so we can’t go, but we’re still excited about its cause.
Tarina Tarantino, former model and queen of nineties rhinestone hair accessories, partnered with Mattel to make her own Barbie Doll.
We’d pretty much die if we got to make a Barbie in our image and it looks like Tarina’s enthusiasm matched ours. Her doll has hot pink hair, pink lace tights, a lime green diamond studded dress and pink lace-up stilettos that, if black, wouldn’t look out of place on Carine’s feet.
We might have to start a doll collection in our office - can someone please fashion Anna out of plastic?
For all you emerging fashion talents out there, listen up:

This just in:
Arlenis, the model love of Fashionista who’s signed with Marilyn, is the next face of Lancome!
If there’s ever been a Cinderella story in the world of modeling, this has to be it -
Everyone knows the kind of big bucks a beauty campaign can rake in, especially from a beauty giant like Lancome, which is even more amazing considering this girl’s been modeling for less than four months.
And to think, we just thought she was so pretty.
Move over Daria everybody, this girl’s about to explode.
Update, September 5, 2008: Though Arlenis’ agent vehemently denied that Arlenis is the new face of Lancome (he even had a lawyer badger us to take this post down), it seems that this in fact is true, just as we always knew. Clearly, we don’t think much of how Marilyn handled the situation, but we do love Arlenis, so we guess we might be able to let this one go.
There’s a little store tucked into the delis and barbershops on the northern end of Bedford Ave. that we have trouble walking past every day.
Jumelle carries about twenty labels on three racks including the best of Sonia Rykiel, Isabel Marant, Devotte, APC, Lover, Alexander Wang, Les Prairies de Paris - the store is our ideal closet. Especially when you throw in their small selection of accessories and jewels by local Brooklyn artisans.
It’s owned by Candice Waldron, a former journalist and TV producer, and managed by her twin sister, hence the store’s French name.
The best part is, they have great sales, including their summer sale which starts today and goes up to 75% off. The sale’s online too, but not everything in the store is online.
So, we’ll see you there after work.
Dear Net-a-Porter,
You know we love you. But did you know that we IM each other cute stuff we find on your site all day long while we’re at work? Like many other girls?
Except, sometimes it gets kind of annoying. Like when I want to sign off of AIM, but first I’ve got to click on the four new things that Britt’s IM’ed me, saying that I would love. So I end up crunching that, along with its requisite “Oohh!” or “You thought I’d like that?!” right in before I leave for the day. Same for her. This works even less well when you don’t work directly opposite the person who’s imagination-shopping for you all day, like with friends that live in other cities with different time zones but that you want to let know that a very cute skirt in their size and color just went on sale.
I suppose we could just e-mail each other suggestions, but you know how much people don’t like unnecessary e-mails.
So here’s what: We think you should have a “Suggested Items list”. Picture it - I’m browsing the newest reductions page, I see this McQ dress I think Britt should consider. But it’s like 7:30am, and I’m not about to put this kind of thing in her Inbox. So wouldn’t it be great if I could Suggest It to her? So that the next time she signs in, a little box pops up saying, “Natalie thought you’d like this” along with whatever other suggestions from whomever else, and then maybe we could even send each other little messages about it, kind of like on Facebook?
Think about it. We know we will.

“$1,600. Category: TV Women
Answer: Lauren and she stopped speaking after she moved in with Spencer on MTV’s The Hills, Duh.”
- from last night’s Jeopardy. No, really.
Sometimes, WWD is really funny.
Not only will they sometimes come up with headlines that make us giggle with our breakfast, but they’re sticking with that word they coined back in December, “delebrities” (celebrities that “design” on the side) which we love, especially since the word sounds so much like “d-list” if you’re looking for an extra side of smirk.
On a side note, here’s something else we’ve noticed - since they’ve launched their blog, which so far seems like a place to put the bits that might piss off the honchos that probably only ever read it in print, some of the regular articles have gotten a little more gossipy than before, like today’s Eye piece analyzing Christie Brinkley’s court attire during her divorce trial.
But, you know you love it.
It’s only been 2 1/2 months since we broke the news of the July Vogue Italia that’s now sold out through advance orders in most New York newsstands - and we’re already on to the next.
According to The Imagist, the August Vogue Italia’s cover will feature Linda (again?), Guinevere van Seenus and Karen Elson.
In case you’re curious about what comes after the most famous magazine issue that we haven’t even seen in person yet.
