Streetwalker: Flower Power

Jul 11, 2008 @ 3:57pm

Streetwalker 71108.jpgCharlie, Assistant to the Creative Director of Tibi

Got Her: About to cross Prince at Lafayette.

Stalked Her: Because she was so tall, we could have sworn she was a model and had to get a closer look. And, among the sea of tourists wearing neutrals, her dress seriously stood out.

Shot Her: Because her dress was a modern take on the 70s, resembled a Marimekko print, yet wasn't from H&M. Plus, she had great confidence and wasn't afraid to wear bold stripes and bright flowers.

She Says: "This is actually a Tibi dress. It's from last season, but I just love it. It makes people smile."

We Say: We love a little not-so-vintage, vintage.

Miranda's Making Waves

Jul 11, 2008 @ 3:20pm

miranda kerr.jpgMiranda Kerr might have been named the 10th highest paid model by Forbes this year, but we still know her as the Victoria's Secret girl who dates Orlando Bloom and once popped up in a Pharrell video.

In fact, she doesn't even have a Style.com profile.

So if her one major gig pays that much, she probably shouldn't be posing for another swimsuit label on the side.

Yet, she's the face of Seafolly, an Australian beachwear brand we came across online featuring a banner of Mirandas against the ocean.

Of course, we'd buy any bathing suit if it'd make us look like her - especially when she's not rolling around in the sand like a VS sex-kitten.

Would You Wear A Men's Dress Shirt (As A Dress)?

Jul 11, 2008 @ 1:42pm

tom cruise.jpgOn a SoHo shopping excursion earlier this week, I was running to the subway and looked up only to be greeted by two ass cheeks peeking out from underneath a floating shirttail.

That's right. No tights, no shorts and nothing to hide.

We're all for pulled together shirt dresses that take a menswear standard and elongates it for a fun summer staple for girls. But we're not entirely sold on the idea of wearing an actual men's shirt that's meant to be tucked into a pair of trousers, but barely skims your butt.

The idea of shopping in your boyfriend's closet sounds like an easy way of stealing his blazers and cuffing the sleeves so you can look just like Gwyneth. And throwing on one of his shirts with a cute sandal is the definition of effortless. Sounds great, doesn't it?

Our only problem is that men's dress shirts aren't really meant to be worn as a dress so they're a bit disproportioned. Belts can help with making a shape, but the hemline continues to creep up and collars begin to look messy. Hence, your ass on display.

It always looks good in the movies and around the house, but would you wear it on the street?

Adventures in Copyrights: David, David, and David

Jul 11, 2008 @ 12:15pm

davids.jpg Those cool kids from London may need to do something besides signature t-shirts.

On the left, you'll see a tank from David David, the British line hyped by rave babes and shown during Topshop's New Gen celebration last year.

David David has partnered with Fred Perry and Henry Holland on various projects and parties, and sells for $75 - $100 per shirt.

It's in Vogue UK a lot, and in Super Super and Dazed, and on the kind of kids who sleep on a mattress of old Kate Moss photos.

On the right, a $19.99 tee from Forever 21.

This shouldn't be surprising, and it isn't, it's just, well...

Bummer.

A Swarovski Secret

Jul 11, 2008 @ 11:59am

rag and bone crystal dress.jpgWe saw this Rag & Bone dress at Neiman Marcus last weekend when we were home for the 4th.

We actually kind of loved it, even though we're generally not crystal fans, but we couldn't figure out how the kings of elegant workwear ended up making something so sparkly.

But a friend of ours (who sold the crystallized frock to an ubiquitous-come-fashion-week TV actress) took a recent trip to the designers' studio, and got the official explanation:

As part of Rag & Bone winning the CFDA Swarovski award last year, they were gifted with a serious amount of gems and, not knowing what to do with them, plastered them on the sides of a signature shift.

And there you have it - Only they could make an obligation look so good.

Going Bananas for Vintage

Jul 11, 2008 @ 11:22am

banana republic lace.jpgWe stopped by Banana Republic's showroom yesterday to preview their holiday collection - and, well, holy Mad Men.

If the costume designers for our favorite show get lost on the way to Kate Spade, it's because they're caught picking up some watered down Michael Kors at Banana.

Their winter palette is purple, black, gold and a pinkish nude. The shapes are definitively vintage: bell cut skirts, boat neck shift tops and dresses, high waisted pencil skirts and cropped 3/4 sleeve jackets. There are a few Prada-esque lace shifts and skirts mixed into the heavy silks and tweed jackets, all paired with patent booties and chunky gold peep-toes. A selection of Inhabit-like sweater coats and boyfriend slacks hung on the casual end.

Even their jewelry looked like it was sourced from antique jewels, especially when nestled next to the fur muffs, (marked "LUXURY"), and elbow length gloves.

We loved almost every single piece. Just wish it came out before fashion week so we could prance around Bryant Park like it's 1962.

Sale at Journelle!

Jul 11, 2008 @ 9:30am

elle macpherson intimates undies.jpgWho: Journelle, a small lingerie shop near Union Square

What: Everything on sale (up to 50% off) - Elle MacPherson Intimates, Dessous, The Lake and Stars, Jimmyjane, Eres, Wolford...

Where: 3 East 17th St (between Fifth and Union Square West), 212.255.7800

When: All of next week, from the 14th to the 20th

Why: Because it's adorable, because you can get a good bra for a lot cheaper, and because (according to reader Ni), they have huge dressing rooms and even give you cashmere robes to wear so you can flash your friends patiently waiting outside to talk you out of that corset thing.

Should we also mention it's right by Rosa Mexicana?

Dylan's + Sephora

Jul 11, 2008 @ 9:00am

dylans candy bar.jpgToday's WWD reports a bite-size partnership between Sephora and Dylan's Candy Bar.

They're putting out a line of bath and body products for this holiday season, all inspired by desserts. Picture stuff like Strawberry Licorice lip balm and Birthday Cake Batter lotion.

Even though we've never been fans of the gourmand trend for beauty (not even Laura Mercier's Crème Brûlée could convince that we want to smell like food), we know this will be a big hit for teenage girls.

But what will happen to Philosophy's adorable Gingerbread Man scrubs and Peppermint Cheesecake shower gels, so popular during those last few weeks of December (and really, what almost everybody knows the brand for), especially at Sephora?

Could be some tension on those shelves.
