Would You Wear Black Lipstick?
Jul 16, 2008 @ 4:25pm
Since the 90's and the Fall runways are what's on our minds most right now, we've been giving a lot of thought to black lipstick.
We saw it at YSL and Giles, and we kind of secretly see it on ourselves, but only with the right invitation, and only if we could pull it off without venturing into Morticia Addams' territory.
We figure we could always switch it out for a super deep red or aubergine to go with super soft eyes, but then it might just look like dark lipstick, which isn't nearly as exciting as a total mouth blackout.
But more importantly - would you wear black lipstick (on a night other than Halloween)? Or is this too reminiscent of that other 90's blunder, Goth?
(And if you already have, then please tell us how you worked it - we seriously want to know!)

Have You Heard About Kloset?
Jul 16, 2008 @ 2:55pm
I have this dress that I'm obsessed with - it's kind of tiny, with a bright floral print on the slightly tulip-ed skirt, and a cream bustier-ish top that's tight enough to let you get away without a bra. It has detachable suspender-like straps, and huge hidden pockets at the hips. Clearly, it's way too special for words, especially since the most typical reaction I get is "Oohh I love that!" followed by "Where's it from?"
So here it is - One of the best small designers I've ever come across is Mollika Ruangkritya, the mastermind designer in Thailand behind what is possibly the most charming label ever, Kloset.
For now, her only stores are in Bangkok, and US stores have only just started carrying her designs. But I highly suggest keeping the name in the back of your head for the next time you need something whimsical, funny, incredibly detailed, and utterly different from what everyone around you is wearing.
A few choice looks after the jump - (couldn't you see that musical notes dress on Blair? Paging Eric Daman...)
Streetwalker: Floral Like it's 1999

Emily, Owns a small design studio for Baggu
Got her: at Prince and Wooster
Stalked her: Because florals were the thing this spring but Emily managed to put her own spin on an already established trend.
Shot her: Because we really love the shape of her dress which is at once girlish and sophisticated. The short hemline and flowers make it summery, but with the high neckline and darker color, she could totally wear this into Fall. She keeps the rest of it simple with black flats and a big brown tote - and we secretly love that she didn't match her shoes to her bag.
She says: "I actually made my dress out of an old skirt. I've been really feeling the old '90s floral prints."
We say: Perfect for that dream date with Jordan Catalano.

Is the Art Worth More Than the Clothes?
Jul 16, 2008 @ 1:38pm
Start saving your pennies.
Christie's just announced that they'll be auctioning off Yves Saint Laurent's weighty art collection come February of 2009.
Without identifying exactly which pieces will be up for grabs, they've estimated the total value at around $600 million. We do know that his and Berge's collection includes works by Picasso, Mondrian, Matisse, Goya and, of course, since he was a fashion person, Warhol.
We expect the people who walk away with the paintings to be the same as those who've walked away with his couture.
And, well, lucky them.

Vogue UK's headline might be, "Pugh's Moët Moment," but look closely and the tab read's "Britain's Enfant Terrible to Design..."
They must still be hurt by his skipping out on London to show at Paris Fashion Week, but at least he hasn't abandoned his home entirely.
In fact, the interiors of the Moët & Chandon VIP room, which offers "a haven of peace," (read free flowing champagne) for the exhausted fashion pack in between the London shows, will be a preview of the Spring/Summer '09 collection Pugh will show two weeks later across the channel. Which kind of means he shows in London first?
"It will most definitely be looking forward - very modern and sharp with clean lines and a tinge of the darkness that seems to permeate my fashion shows," he says.
We can't wait to see what goes on in the sure to be dark and spooky room. Luckily, our camera's flash is quite strong.
Adventures in Copyright: Déjà Vu

What would happen if Forever 21 sold original Marc by Marc dresses next to all of their rip-offs?
Chaos would surely ensue.
Reader Jasmine alerted us to this black and white scalloped Matty M dress which originally cost $148 at Nordstrom. It's simple, cute and its retro design is actually an exact copy of the Karta dress to the right - which debuted a full year ago and, though now sold out on Nordstrom's website, cost around $225.
Which means you could have bought the original, well made, independently designed dress for about $75 dollars more and supported an up and coming brand. Or you could have bought the barely cheaper version without the extra details - stitching, a-line shape etc. that you need to see in person - that set it apart from the racks of summer dresses at H&M.
But, well, you know where we stand on this one.
CFDA/Vogue Finalists
Jul 16, 2008 @ 9:35am
The CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Selection Committee announced the finalists for this year's award:
Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock of Vena Cava, Richard Chai, Swaim and Christina Hutson of Obedient Sons & Daughters, Alejandro Ingelmo, Irene Neuwirth, Juan Carlos Obando, John Patrick of Organic, Albertus Q. Swanepoel of Albertus Quartus, Alexander Wang, and Jason Wu.
As always, we won't know who's following in the steps of Rogan, Trovata, Doo-Ri and Proenza by winning the big $200,000 and industry mentorship until the big dinner gala on November 17th.
In the meantime, we're looking forward to the big spread in Vogue - we can already see Erin posing tough in one of Alexander's designs - and the off chance that maybe they'll put together another Seamless.
Seriously, can we get another Seamless?
Naomi Shakes it for the Gecko
Jul 16, 2008 @ 9:00am
We don't really watch a whole lot of TV (ok, that's a total lie), so we somehow totally missed that Naomi does commercials for Sobe water.
So since it's Wednesday, and since we love when supermodels prance around gunmetal bathing suits, we thought we'd have to share this with you all in order to still be good friends.
Good morning!
