Adventures in Copyright: Can’t Rhyme Orange

marc by marc orange dress aic.jpgSent in by reader Moye:

We know the Marc by Marc dress at left would be difficult for pretty much anyone to wear.

But the Mod Cloth rip-off to the right? Impossible for everyone.

The even more impossible part is that it’s $75, considerably more than the Forever 21 send-up from a couple months ago (though yes, so much cheaper than the original Marc by Marc).

But we’re wondering - who would wear a knock-off of an already unsightly dress?

And why are people still knocking it off?

There are two things wrong with the Mod-Cloth knock-off. A) it's called the "Dreamsicle" dress on the site B) In the description is says it has a "bow bib"

a) who would want to be referred to as a dreamsicle?
b) who would want to wear something the "designers" refer to as a bib?

Are you going to give credit to commenter #1 who posted this dress in the comments of the last AIC from yesterday?

I like it too! F21 did a crap job of copying it.

Hey! I just saw a photo of a girl in Paris wearing this (the marc one) and looking really cute, so maybe its not so difficult to pull off.

Though its credited as Marc Jacobs, not Marc by Marc.

that was me! i posted it yesterday...

oh well...

i think the mod cloth one is horribly cheap and tacky looking. i hate the buttons and the contrast between bright white and ugly orange.

as far as the original marc dress... i can only imagine it being worn by someone with a really short torso.

Haha i like it, but i might be a bit biased because I now own it. The copy is not that bad, although i like the old colores much better.

I agree. It bothers me a lot that Fashionista doesn't give any credit to readers who send in knockoff tips. Or most tips in general.

In defense of Mod Cloth, they didn't design the dress (Shulami did) and as a small clothing store that carries items in a medium to lower price range, there are just not a lot of options. I own a small clothing store that sells items similar to what Mod Cloth carries. It is very frustrating and hard to find unique designs in this price range (under $100). The market is so saturated with knock-offs (all thanks to F21). I hate all the knock-offs but I also need to fill my shelves and hit an affordable price range. what do you do?

I love the dress. I think Dita would wear it. But everyone has an opinion--I'd love to own it (Marc version, of course)!

I love the MJ dress. I loved the whole SP08 collection. It's so pretty like Zooey Deschanel. But the knock off is so gross and cheap I wanna puke. Please, do not buy the F21 knockoff. You will have NO cred in the fashion world.

I can't tell, but i think the marc dress could look really good with fitted sizes, just under the cream.

i saw a production picture of leighton meester wearing the marc by marc version with a kate spade bag on the set of gossip girl. i'd wear anything that blair waldorf wears.

as pointed out above, mod cloth doesn't "make" any of its clothing, they buy from other retailers.

they focus on picking out cool items, not making them.

for knocking on mod cloth i almost don't even want to come back here. this is not like forver21 and topshop marketing to the masses. this is a small store that's run be like three people. you guys suck.

This might just be a personal thing, but I think that orange is SUCH an ugly color.

I blogged about this a while ago too, because I was bummed that I had JUST bought that dress (albeit in a different, more forgiving "ochre" colorway of mustard and navy) and then along came the knockoff.

Also, I saw a photo of Leighton Meester in the dress (in the above colorway) on the set of GG so I bet it will be in season 2!
